Ship integrity, how does it work?

I am unclear about "ship integrity".
I made a 3 day blitz trip to Colonia. When, I docked at Colonia Orbital, I had 14% "ship integrity". Yet, my hull was at 98%. I got a little to close to a star whilst fuel scooping, and tried to scan a planet at full speed.
Then, just recently I started a run to Sagittarius A*, with the intent of doing some serious system/detailed surface scanning exploration.
After, going 5 days and only 124 jumps, I took an external camera view of my ship. I was in a system with a B class star, wanted to see my ship in a blue light.
But, I digress, (damn attention deficit), I was alarmed at how bad my ship looked.
I abandoned trip to Sagittarius, flew back to Arcanonn's Legacy, and discovered ship integrity was at 29%.
But, hull strength was never below 100%.
I had even used a couple of repair limpets just for craps and giggles.
I have heard of people taking weeks and months away from any chance of repair facilities, the Distant World's trip for one.
Is ship integrity worn down by high stress actions, i.e. initiating and dropping out of hyperspace and super cruise, and combat?
Or, from random "bits" impacting hull during super cruise?
Is it based on time in flight?
And, if it does reach 0% does my ship just disintegrate?
Can someone please help clarify this conundrum.

It's wear and tear, time spent in supercruise affect ship integrity. You lose a percentage of your hull depending on the ship integrity, up to 30% at 0% ship integrity.

And your ship doesn't explode with 0% integrity.

I hope it's clear.

I do a lot of supercruise travel and 1.8 mil LS will cause around 19 -20% damage. It is also what causes your paint to decay also. It is caused by space dust radiation and blah blah.

Also the lower the integrity the faster modules will be damaged.

Mainly just regular wear and tear you would get on any type of vehicle. I welcome the feature.

At 0% integrity your hull has only 70% of full strength but otherwise as above. Time in SC reduces integrity, and increases paint wear too. Unless you get into combat or regularly hit planets without shields it has no effect on gameplay.
