Ship Interiors, Ship Interiors, Ship Interiors, Ship Interiors...

I took a hiatus from Elite after finishing all the ground grind that I was interested in and hopped over to checkout Star Citizen 3.16. Let me tell you, ship interiors is without a doubt, the absolute prime feature missing in Elite. I love Elite. I have many thousands of hours here. I want Elite to succeed, and I want it to be the best space sim ever. To do that, we must have the complete experience. The ground game and space game must be seamlessly combined. Yes, there will be tedium involved. Star Citizen has, I would argue, too much tedium. However, the emergent gameplay and experiences offered up in Star Citizen's Alpha, despite the tedium, is incredible. If Elite could merge these two systems along with a few prime features such as EVA'ing, ship-to-ship docking, and complete game-loops that utilize both systems - no other game could touch it. In my opinion, Star Citizen is a long way from completion. I would guess at minimum 3 years. Fdev has time, but we need to hear about it. We need to be hyped about it. We need to be involved in the feature ideas along the way. If you agree with me, don't let this idea get buried.

tldr; We want Elite to be the best space game ever. To do that, we must start with Ship Interiors.

As a side note, if you have not tried Star Citizen, I STRONGLY suggest you do. Jump in for one week and then report back here. No, it's not blasphemy. It's one of those things some people may not realize they need until they see it.

What we need? Multiple rebuys from ships and SRV's randomly blowing, just walking down the ramp or getting in to the SRV, repeatedly being sent to the respawn screen when walking through doors and etc, SC isn't an example to put forward when arguing for ship interiors. People who want to walk around in ships want ship interiors, and while that might be a nice addition to the game, it's hardly the be all and end all some people here are making it out to be. Succesfully having ship interiors with infinite freedom of movement games like ED have isn't easy to implement, most games in the past have done it using tricks, but I suggest it's not as simple as some people seem to think!

I prefer elite to star citizen ALTHOUGH the ship interiors are neat. It just reinforced my opinion that we need them.

Now those figures are not exact, but they show (i hope) an important point. ED can not afford to be falling down a money-pit like (it could be argued) Star Citizen has. Focus on the core game (in ED) and make it better, throwing the kitchen sink in costs time and money and those are more finite resources in ED than they perhaps are in Star Citizen? Frontier need to choose their battles well imho.

Ah, the same Star Citizen that has just blamed backers for them having to remove the release view roadmap? The same Star Citizen that sold a ship that was on the roadmap and then removed that ship from the roadmap after making the sale? The same Star Citizen that has raised 500 million, over 700 employees, taken 10+ years, has no release date in sight, and the only item of the list for the next patch is a Coffee Vendor?

That Star Citizen?

Yes, i understand, ship interiors are nice, give a sense of immersion, and its one of the pluses of Star Citizen. But its taken them years to get there. Each ship takes months or even years to develop, not to mention all the issues with physics it causes having moving objects inside moving objects. FD might be able to add ship interiors, but its going to be one hell of a job and even a barebones implementation i would suspect take a couple of years and would have to be a separate DLC.

Should FD do ship interiors? Its an interesting question. Personally i'd rather have their efforts go elsewhere first (full atmospheric planets), but in the future? Sure, why not? But its not something FD can just flick a switch and make happen.

I'd like full atmospheric planets as well, but I can't help feeling that if ship interiors are complicated, simulating a planet is going to be more complicated and take considerably more effort.

The planets themselves? They've already done planets, with plants and stuff. I think they can handle adding water and rivers and lava. Adding some sort of aerial turbulence based on the density of atmosphere for the flight model, also not a biggie. Animals, we know they can do animals. I don't see anything really beyond FD's capabilities.

Its more a question of amount of work. Both would take a load of work if its going to be done right.

I have to say, fluid dynamics would be an amazing update. Not just clouds and running water, but lakes, or maybe even ice that can melt. Flowing lava, volcanoes, Ash plumes...

All of that was really cool, but I think it's important to recognize what people asking for ship Interiors really want; they want a more seamless experience connecting the ship parts of the game and the ground parts of the game.

And this is a reasonable complaint. It's a complaint that has been valid ever since Horizons came out; the vast majority of players barely do any SRV content, and when they choose to participate in Odyssey content, it tends to be a focused engagement, without much participation in space content, until they get bored with the ground content again.

Part of the problem is, the game seems very dedicated to keeping the two games separate. For example, the way you need to have a prolonged docking process before you can get out of your ship. Realistic? Perhaps. But much like Interstellar travel, sometimes it's important to sacrifice realism for the sake of player experience. Personally, I would be more than happy to sacrifice the ship's ability to land without a docking computer, if it meant I could drop off my SRV from midair, and later pick it up via Skyhook.

And, in my opinion, that's the sort of content to the game really needs; ways of bringing the two different games together in a player friendly manner. And, I think, what players are subconsciously craving when they ask for ship Interiors.
