I was wondering, how come those kits don't add up to the mass and weight?

Cosmetics. They do not change the size of the ship, do not have a hit box and don't affect handling. This is for some very good reasons. This isn't abnormal. A lot of games with cosmetics keep them eye candy only.

If they added weight, thats a ship performance downgrade. I wouldnt pay money for that.
If they added net possitive attributes, Then we are in pay 2 win territory and i would stop playing Elite.

Arguably we are all paying to win.... Well - apart from there isn't really a concept of winning in ED. But I'm still paying... paying with my life.

They do its just that because they are made of polystyrene, the effects are negligible.
