Ship names and Iain M. Banks

I'd think for many players, given what are sometimes the best way to advance in game.... Ethics Gradient may prove appropriate. How low will each player go to get themselves out of a hole, or up the ladder ?

Well, I named my Exploration ship the "Killashandra Ree" after the Anne McCaffery novels, but I might consider renaming her to "What's that over there" or something.

Tilly Sober - a perfect ship's name. If I ever own one IRL that's what I'll name her. I bet you can guess the source - I was very young.

I.M.B but none-Culture
The Lady Sharrow (I found "Against A Dark Background" to be very thought provoking. In many ways they're in a worse position than the Moties)

Phssthpok, Dalton-Quinn, 100101101110 (yes, I'm another Niven Fan)

Kin Arad (explorer), C.M.O.T (trader), Lord Vetinari (only on a large ship) (yes, I'm a Pratchett fan too, though "Kin Arad" is also on the list as a new CMDR name for the next time I'm killed without enough insurance ... again).

Other ship names on the list:-
Droit de Seigneur, :D
For the MUG!
Whisky Tango Foxtrot  (if the sensor allows that)

Mine are named in a pseudo-Banksian fashion, with a distinct tendency towards hazard warnings:

Cobra - "Objects in Mirror are Closer Than They Appear"
T6 - "Mind The Gap" (named as soon as I pranged it in the letterbox on its maiden flight!)
DBX - "Slippery When Wet"
Asp - "May Contain Nuts".

There does seem to be a correlation between Elite players and a disposition in youth towards goth bands. Guilty of some Sisters/NMA/Neph/Mission/etc.. in my own youth too. I'm willing to bet that the (ex and still active) goths here all played '84 Elite. Therefore... Elite is a goth thing, and goth is a geek thing, and... Iain. M. Banks is a geekgoth thing and... stuff.

Ha, my forum name should give you a clue.

Although elite is actually the only game where I don't use this name in game, I'm Cmdr Abelard Lindsay which is a slightly lesser known sci fi reference.

Right just tossing this in here: I named my black colored vulture. The B.B.C

which obviously stands for Big.Black.Covert

I have no idea what you other guys think it means. filthy filthy minds.

Some of us spent far too long in dingy black holes in the 80's and 90's. Some of us still do... ;)
Some of us went to see Sisters of Mercy on their tour in October. That was an EPIC night! :)

In keeping with the Sisters/Banks vibe, you could always try some of these for ship names (all from "Under The Gun"):
"Forget The Many Steps To Heaven"
"Happiness Is A Loaded Weapon"
"The Meek Will Inherit What They Damn Well Please"

I saw them in the summer of 2014 at Sonisphere. Although 'saw them' is a bit of an exaggeration, what I actually saw was a lot of billowing dry ice and a fuzzy Eldritch shaped silhouette:p

Make sure to keep the ships names clean guys, if the yellow smileys appear, it's not good, so re phrase or change the word.

thank you.

That's at least one actual Culture ship name (or nickname at least) out the window then. :)
