Will we be able to name our ships, and will others be able to see our ship names? Historically ships names have played an important part in our history and culture. Grand ceremonies have been attached to the naming of a ship. It is considered bad luck to rename a ship. Great ships have carved their places in our collective culture, such as the The Santa María which was the flagship in the small fleet that found the Americas. Others are remembered for more notorious reasons such as Queen Anne's Revenge Captained by Black Beard. Some are remembered for their misfortune such as Titanic. In literature ship names help in fleshing out a vivid world for the characters to live. Sometimes they are vehicles for the explorations of the protagonists, such as in Nemo's Nautilus, other times they are quite the opposite. In TV and Movies there abounds a myriad of ships each with their own mythos, Enterprise, Serenity, etc. In video games ship names have continued to enrich the lore of the stories found in such media such as the highwind of FFVII. In MMOs ship names have also become central to the continuation and creation of player made stories and lore. When the first titan was lost in Eve Online it was named Steve, and to this day you can still visit the wreck of Steve. It strikes me that in a universe that spaceships are so central in, that ship names would be as important as player names in helping us define who we are as our personal stories unfold in the game world.
