Ship naming has been asked for many many times. I understand it's on the todo list, but don't hold your breath for it.
Actually, I have a scenario where ship naming is important...
I use a single station as my "homebase". In that station, I have 2 Asp's. One fitted for combat,the other for exploration. How do I tell them apart when changing stip at the shipyard?

At the moment I use the ship price to tell the difference. Still, we really need ship naming, even if it's only the user that can see the ship name.
If they implemented this, I would be completely satisfied with the ship name appearing only in the ship information on the Contacts panel and/or the target information in the lower-left of the GUI.
Yeah, a wish asked many times. Would be nice to have it in wings. Because on the other hand I dont imagine this being too difficult to implement.
Quite honestly, tag naming moons and planets for first discoveried seems way, way more complex than this request.
So, maybe we can have some hope soon?

personalisation
I can imagine that it's more difficult to implement a personalisation on the ship level.
The pilot name is based on the account and has a filter for uniqueness and it's static.
On the ship level it can't be static and the a uniqueness filter must be implemented on ship level with a realtime update.
Anyway I'm happy.

I've seen at least two people who have decided to name their ships "Icarus". I, myself, would be heartbroken if I found I could not name my ships that which I chose. I don't think there needs to be a 'uniqueness filter' for ships.
Second, I wholeheartedly agree with the idea of naming our ships. Not just to tell them apart in a shipyard, but that it gives you a more connected feeling to your ship. Yes, I am sentimental. To have someone target me and have both my name and my ship's name displayed in their target information would be amazing, like so:
Eagle - 'Talyn'
CMDR Talynne Star
Clean/Wanted
(Blah blah extra info)
Another option/addition, which I understand would be a bit more difficult, would be a decal on one side of your ship somewhere. When in outfitting, there could be a fourth Decal option. When you click on it, it would bring up a type box where you could enter your ship's name, as well as a drop-down tab with a few font selections...maybe five or six variations. I know that would be a lot of work in programming and such, but man it would make SUCH a difference, especially now with the external debug camera, to see your ship's name emblazoned on the side in the picture. I would be extra happy and proud to own that ship seeing that. ^_^
