One thing I don't like about Elite is the min/maxing that can be done with optional internal modules –This allows people who basically want to gank others to design a far superior ship (since they spend all internals/utilities on combat stuff). It also limits the smaller ships a lot. I wonder if it would benefit the game if more core internal slots were added and optionals were limited.
So for example add core slots for (one each) = shield generator, fuel scoop, guardian FSD booster, limpet controller (one multi-purpose), interdictor, hull reinforcement, docking computer, supercruise assist, scanner (one multi-purpose scanner), guardian shield rein, guardian hull rein, guardian module rein, shield cell bank and planetary vehicle. Every ship gets 1 of each and you are not punished for having them. Possibly also have fixed utility slots (so every ship has at least 1 point defense, 1 shield booster).
Optional modules would then be used for cargo, passengers, ore processing equipment, fighter bay, extra fuel. Optional modules could no longer be used to stack stuff like hull reinforcements.
This would accomplish 4 things:
-People would no longer be able to design super PVP/combat ships by using up all their optional internals for combat stuff. It would greatly even the playing field.
-Ships would be more flexible.
-Smaller ships/ships with limited optional internals would get a good buff since you don't have to waste so many optional internals on scanners, limpet controllers, etc...
-Easier ship balance since you can no longer use optional slots to stack stuff like hull reinforcements, shield cell banks, etc...
