No this isn't about if you like it or not, there are enough threads for it. Here we for now assume its coming and discuss what could be possible with it!
See, one of the reason I was against it (well still really am but it doesn't matter here) is that not having instant ship transport does remove some posssible gameplay. BUT having it, more specificly Ship printing, can add gameplay too as I started to realise!
While of course it isn't all set in stone just yet it looks like it will be 3D printing to create a copy of your ship, and you can't have every ship/module in every shipyard/outfitting because its more about the place itself or you having the license to do so.
This does open up some gameplay possabiltys, we could have lawless factions printing illegal ships without license. Those ships wouldn't have insurance so are lost upon destrction for good but they also would be much cheaper and since they are illegal getting scanned by the cops while in one will get you into lot of trouble (that can be high bounty and even not letting you dock). And hey, I hear those pirates can barley make money so some chance for cheap ship could help a bit (not sure how much, or any at all, but I at least think about those poor pirates
)
I too would say Engineers don't touch those ships, so no modding. Or maybe only some don't, there are some engineers supposed to be more shady after all. Not really sure about that. Speaking of which - we could copy a mod to get matching weapons, it could be covered by the license maybe only allows for a very limited number of copys and only on weapons. Don't pin down on details I just throw around Ideas.
Another interessting question is of course: What happens with the original that gets left behind? If its just a standard ship we can assume it just goes back on the market to be sold (I do believe the ships are for the most part supposed to be second already to begin with, not sure tough on that when it comes to lore) but Ships with mods on them maybe could end uip in a special sales secion of the Market.
Those ship would come with mods when buying, depending on how many mods and what for mods it makes the price but they are of course much more expensive then your standard ship - finding the right forumla for prices could be quite difficult tough, I'm not sure how viable it even is to do from a programm standpoint don't know any of that.
But if for example a market could be created where ships get abandond end up there to be sold that could also work with the non modded ships, you then basicly have ships already fitted out to some degree and modded ships to buy there. But then again, if la incense is needed to print them that means its basicly a license to sell them, but I do think we could put this in the category of gameplay trumps logic without much problems.
I mean, maybe you take a look on the market first to see whats there and spot a ship thats better with better mods then your own, so you sell that and buy the new one! Just thinking about it, people could start creating great Shipmarkets at certain places and putting and modding together ships and sell them there. Not that they make money with that, but they make an attractive place to get people there. For many it isn't about money after all.
Just some Ideas, I do believe we can have here some great gameplay chances, something much more interessting then just pressing a button! What are anybody elses Ideas?
