If you're trading the upgrade path is thus:
Sidewinder 4 tons cargo - Hauler 16t -Cobra 36t - Lakon 6 100t - Lakon 9 440t

If you're interested in bounty hunting or other form of combat activity the Eagle, Viper, or Cobra. Viper is the best IMO.

With 40k the only ship you can upgrade to is a hauler I believe. Whatever choice you make be sure to keep about 10% of the cost of ship and equipment to cover the insurance deductible.

I might keep doing stolen gold runs untill I have enough for a cobra seems like a rather veritile ship for both combat and trading.

It is. I might suggest getting a hauler and then continuing scooping gold. You can carry 4 times as much gold before you need to go to the station and sell :)

I recommend buying a Hauler ASAP (yes, this ship is boring), take your Hauler to the LP 98-132 system. Spool up the hyperdrive and navigate around Freeport (the only station) at 30km/s and watch for Unidentified Signals. Jump out of hyperspace at these locations and scoop up any gold cargo (ignore anything else). You might only find gold at 1/10 locations, but it's worth it. Here's the important part. If you at any time see any ships jump into the area, get the hell out of dodge, yes even if it means leaving the gold behind.

Once you have a full cargo hold (16 tons), head over to Freeport and sell your gold on the black market for ~5,000 CR per ton. That's ~80,000 CR per load, pretty soon you'll be able to upgrade to the Type 6 (100 cargo space), then you're ready to check out trade routes and run cargo full-time. If you like running cargo, upgrade to the Type 9 and really start making CR, like 500,000 CR per trip for short routes.

When you've had your fill of cargo running and you feel like you've established a nice bank account, trade in your ship for a Viper Mk III and equip it with Cannons (two G2 and two G4), K-Warrant Scanner and Defense turret and seek out conflict zones and Nav beacons. I didn't truly start enjoying this game until I purchased a Viper. Even my Anaconda was kinda "meh." I felt very disconnected from the game with the larger boring ships. You're also willing to take bigger risks in a ship like a Viper MK III so you'll find yourself interacting with players more often. If it explodes, you can replace it (fully equipped) for ~6,000 CR

yeah, there is no money earning through fighting so hauler is only option, then type6/9 then viper and have fun fighting :)

unless beta2 comes before type 9 then you can have with new mission system and maybe mining(not confirmed yet)

Go the hauler and then the cobra and you can trade a bit then fight a bit to keep things interesting.

You can make decent money bounty hunting and scooping the cargo they drop then selling it but it won't be the same profit you can make in a dedicated freighter.

Is there any reason you recommend that system? Is gold particularly prevalent there? Or is it just because it's a convenient/close one?

Also, do you know how the gold is allocated? ie. if 10 people are in that system all playing solo, and one person scoops up all the gold then is it all gone? or is it all still there in each of the other 9 peoples games?

ie. if everyone now piles over to LP98-132 is there going to be a lot let gold around because everyone is there scooping it up...?

I'm a newbie and want to go gold hunting to get some cash for a hauler...

LP98-132 because it's an anarchy near the starting spot. Anarchy systems spawn more gold I believe and also you can just take your gold to Freeport and not worry about smuggling it in as you would other places. As far as I know a USS will spawn random encounters so however many people are scooping your chances of finding gold will be the same.

This is not quite correct. If you have a kill warrant scanner you can make money bounty hunting. I've seen bounty as high as 9k and I saw a YT video that showed a 19k bounty, although anything over 3k is fairly rare. I just turned in about 50k worth of bounty vouchers. However this is correct in that the money earned bounty hunting is no where near what you can make trading, especially with something that has better cargo capacity than a sidewinder

But if someone grabs a specific lump of gold is it no longer there for anyone else? ie. if everyone else is faster than you, you could end up running round in circles chasing recently spawned gold that then gets nabbed by someone else, and then chasing the next spawned gold, then the next one...?

I kept 'losing track' of un-identified objects, but I'm not sure if they were being taken by other people, or if I was just over/undershooting as I dropped out of cruise.

By the way, in a solo game do NPC's pick up the gold in anarchy systems...?
