Ship Rebuy/Insurance....

Should Frontier do away with Ship Re-buys/Insurance?
Would it make the game better?
If you had a big ship worth 500 million credits kitted out, you could afford to replace it because you would have been playing the game a considerable time and have a considerable credit balance. Granted, you would lose any engineered mods, but you would not lose your Rep with anyone so could redo the engineering anyway.
(Do your engineered mods get replaced on re-buy? i am not sure, but if they do where do the Insurance get the exact same mods?)
I think it would make the game better.
Thoughts please...

Quick seperate question- (Do your engineered mods get replaced on re-buy? i am not sure, but if they do where do the Insurance get the exact same mods?):p

Mods get replaced.

And I happen to like being able to rebuy my ship. I don't get enough game time to grind out another 420,000,000cr for my Anaconda, after accidentally flattening skimmers when landing. :D
And then re-mod it on top of that.

No rebuy would make big ships exclusive to people with loads of time to play. Everyone else with a family and full time jobs, and other hobbies would be forced to use smaller ships.

It's a topic that has been visited many times before.

Personally I lament such high rebuys on my biggest ships. I'd love to be able to play my Corvette in PvP a lot but the rebuy is staggering. I don't expect to get much sympathy and in truth I can afford er... several of such rebuys but if you want to play a lot they'll soon stack up*. So like many other CMDRs I don't fly it.

Of course I'm not suggesting it should be free or without penalty and honestly other than cutting a % or two I don't have any bright ideas either :(

*It's not so much the sum of the loss but the perceived value for money. As a not very good PvPer i could lose that rebuy for about 1 minutes worth of gametime.

It could work both ways - when you purchase a ship you have the option of paying the current price, which comes with the insurance premium OR you can buy the ship at 50% of the value but you don't get and will never have insurance on the ship. Should sort out the smart players and the dumb impetuous ones pretty quickly!

Also we need to consider that there are already players out in the black that somehow regularly buy a brand new ship and take off without realising they don't have sufficient funds to cover the insurance. And all they do is come onto the forums and cry about it then try to submit a ticket to Customer Support - Doh ....

I still think some kind of "PvP insurance" is needed, which is basically just a reduction in rebuy for PvP, to support competitive PvP to the death.

The trouble is sorting it so trolls and murderhobo can't use it, because if they had cheap insurance, we'd never be able to stop them.
Maybe you can only get it if you don't have a PFB.

Maybe a pre-paid insurance, a bit like Eve Online...? It's incredibly cheap to buy if you're clean, and will cover all PvP related rebuys for a set amount of time, from 1 day, to 1 year. You can buy different lengths to suit your needs.
Gaining a PFB voids the insurance, and you then need to pay the normal rebuy on death, and lose what you paid for the PvP premium.

Just a random thought, probably full of holes. I might try and come up with a detailed idea later.

I like the idea of no insurance, or at least hike the insurance up so it balances out the risk. If you want to fly around at near indestructible levels, you should pay the price when you are destroyed. SAdly this will only encourage combat logging. What I'd also like to see is criminals paying the same/higher bounty than the ship re-buy when there isn't a wanted assigned to the CMDR destroyed.

I too support the idea of increased premiums (maybe not do away with completely though).
A ship should not be a throw-away item, and even PvP is more exciting if there is the risk of actually losing something.

It takes a lot more skill to fight while needing to survive, than just moronic blast-to-destruction, and repeat - meh.
