Ship Recall

So while scavaging planetside I land at POIs deploy my SRV and dismiss my ship, when I come across said POI, usually with scattered cargo laying about, I recall the old girl and start scooping up cargo.

It dawned on me that my ship always lands 500 to 600 meters away no matter what the terrain is. Its not really that far away but when the scarab only has 2 units of cargo space it can become a hassle.

So is there a way to coax your ship into landing any closer to you other than boarding it and flying it where you want it manually?

Just be happy it lands and actually finds you without getting blown up in the sky by someone else while it's waiting...

We need the A grade Recall Ship Upgrade unit :)

Would be nice if it went closer, especially if there is flat space around.

I had an odd one last night where I recalled the ship, got under it with my SRV and it took off again lol

Ship computer might have a virus? :p

currently I'm in my python.
I recall ship, it lands 2km away. I drive over and board fly to the cargo and land next to it. beats me why it wont land closer.

Maybe theres a certain radius to you in which it can land depending on ship size, I fly my litte dbx for salvaging.

I had my nearest landing in ages a couple of days ago, at one of the alien sites of all places. I drove out of the "settlement" exclusion zone with about 8% hull left, recalled the ship and it landed about 250m away. Maybe it's a quirk of the large Thargoid exclusion zone, because I can't remember the last time a ship landed so close. Most of my landings are wilderness landings and the ship recalls to between 500m and 1km.

The ship aborting if the SRV is underneath it is relatively new behaviour; in early Horizons I used to try to drive underneath for instant pickup and while I never quite aligned with the hatch the ship did used to land over the SRV eventually. Not sure when this changed but I did notice the auto-abort a few times during a recent Sag A* - Colonia trip.

It took off again for safety reasons. your ship goes down a bit when landing due to the gear having shock absorbers. If the ship lands while you are underneath it, your SRV could be crushed.

I didn't do much planetary stuff in 2.1 and 2.2 but the recall feel much worse than it was back when horizons launched. The ship used to always land close by or if you take the terrain to reasonable spot. Now it feels like the ship is never close to you.

Recall, note the direction you travel to get to the ship and the rough distance.

Deliver first 2T of cargo, board ship, fly over on the 180 degree reverse of what the direction was.

Land next door, transfer quickly.

:D

I think it was changed with 2.1 or 2.2 because many players got squished under their ships.
Take a close look and you will see, that most ships are lifting up from the ground for deploying SRV. Most ships are too close on ground that an SRV would fit underneath and that's why so many got squished and the ship now refuses to land if you drive underneath it. You just get the massage that the landing zone is occupied.

The size of ship seems to make the biggest difference. The smaller ships seem to have much more choice of landing positions [which is logical] and appear from my own experience to regularly come in very close to me.

However, in large ships, I recall them, I board them, and then fly them closer until I find that needle on the haystack I can actually land upon. 99/100 I can find somewhere very close even with a big ship.

What I haven't tried - and I expect won't work, is whether you could just use collector limpets directly from the ship - I've seen videos of some commanders successfully cargo-scooping planetary cargo in their ships, but this is almost impossible to aim in the very large ships.

Perhaps I'm just a terrible pilot.

Scratch the perhaps. I know I am terrible!
