Ship Recommendations

Okay so I've been player for a decent amount of time now and have taken a liking to playing as a bounty hunter and smuggler/courier and I am currently using the cobra MK III, but it's just not doing it for me. So if anyone has a recommendation for a ship that is good for the roles I play (i.e. tough, good firepower, jump range, and cargo cap.) I'd be grateful.

You have several options. The Viper Mk IV is worth a look or either of the Diamondbacks. You might consider the Vulture or Imperial Courier for combat, though they do have drawbacks for other roles. If you have the credits you might want to look at the Asp Explorer, it has great range and a larger cargo capacity. The only drawback is combat. You have to be careful with it, as it's big and not so tough, but has good firepower. Probably best to look at one of the ship comparison sites http://coriolis.io/

Vulture for pure combat. But it has :):):):):):) jump range and not much compartments for cargo racks.
But it wrecks ships with the two Class 3 hard points.

Hm... go for an Asp Explorer, it's a good step up from Cobra if you like multi purpose ships.

Currently using the Viper Mk.IV for a couple of multi-purpose stuffs. Quite loving it. Cheap to upgrade as well.

Viper Mk IV, or Asp. The latter is actually a tough little cookie with class 6 shields. 6 hardpoints for a bit of the 'ol fire. It's also very good for long-range missions or smuggling. :)

I'm not sure of your finances but don;t forget to look at the Federal Assault Ship. It is an excellent ship.

I'd say ASP Explorer. Great combat ship (for extended encounters I use 4 c1 G pulse and 2 c2 G multi-cannons), range, and decent internals. The Clipper for PvE is one of the best hybrid ships in the game right now. It offers some of the best FA-off pivoting in the game, pretty much unmatched speed (thanks to drift), good jump range, and plenty of internals.

Bounty hunter, smuggler, and courier... but the Cobra's not doing it for you? Ehh? :S

Well, alright then, how much do you have, and what do you have in the way of naval ranks? Not much point in recommending ships that are miles outside your range in cost.

I'll echo "Asp Explorer".
I haven't tried the scout variant but the Asp was my go to ship for EVERYTHING for quite a while. You get decent cargo space, excellent jump range and plenty of hard points and utility points for kitting her out for combat. I eventually replaced her with Federal Dropship for my combat needs (and then replaced the FDS with an Assault Ship) but I still keep an Asp around as an all-purpose vessel.

I think there are several available choices. In general terms i would recommend the Python, if you can afford it (around 150 millions to fit it properly). The Vulture and FDL are great ships for BH (probably the best ones for that purpose, i would say around 10 mil for the vulture and 50 mil for FDL to buy ship+fitting) but cargo/jump range are not good at all. Otherwise stick with the cobra, it is an excellent multipurpose ship!

Another new ship that you should have a look at is the Asp Scout. This may just fit the bill.

The Asp Scout is actually a step backwards from the Cobra Mk 3, but for almost 20 times the price.

It has one class higher power distributor, stronger shields and slightly better jumprange, but these advantages are more than outweighed by its disadvantages, like fewer internal compartments, less cargo space and especially it's slow as a snail (around Python speed).

No idea what that ship is supposed to be good for. If you can afford an Asp Scout, better save up a little more for an Asp Explorer, which is an order of magnitude better in every regard.

Ah, the Cobra... my first love. Still have her decked out for smuggling, she's a beast at it. How's the Mk IV, it could be an optional upgrade for you.

In terms of feel, look no further than the Asp! She's basically the Cobra Plus, with nice jump range, enough armament to put up a fight, and cargo for days. After that, look to the Clipper.

I prefer all around ships, and my progression goes something like: Sidey->Cobra->Asp->Clipper. At that point, you can move to Python then Anaconda, but chances are you'll enjoy the Clipper far too much.

It's not so much it doesn't work it's more I'm looking for something new and if possible a step or two up from the cobra. Money is not an issue and at the moment I don't have any naval ranks, but I can always change that.

These along with the FAS, asp scout, Clipper, and Python

I'd go with a Vulture less the small cargo bay. Add a Fuel Scoop given it's small fuel tank and an A-rated version still gets a 16LY jump range with a 360 boost speed. Not bad for an Anaconda killer.

But then I've also found that what I think I need isn't what I really need as my skills and experience improve. The more ships I fly the better I am at dialing in the next loadout. Moving up too quickly is less rewarding and very risky.
