Ship Roles

I'm expanding my fleet and wondering what ships and their roles I'm missing;

Current Fleet;
AspX - Exploraration and plantary mat gatherer
Vulture - CZ fighter
Python - Deep core miner and USS gatherer
Type 10 - Laser miner
Imperial Eagle - Dust gatherer
Krait mk2 - Mission runner
Anaconda - Deep space explorer
Beluga - Vip passenger ship

Not bought yet but thinking about;
Mamba / Viper mk 3 - Racer
FDL - PvP
A pirate ship?!
Something to trade with

Any other good must have ships in your fleet or roles I haven't mentioned?

DBX - bubble taxi & Dav's Hope scavenger (although your Asp might fill this role if it can jump 50+ Ly's)
Corvette (fully engineered) - CZ annihilator
Krait mk2 - for transporting "questionable" passengers. I named mine "No Questions Asked".

Yeah, my asp will max out at 63 ly jump range. Still ranking with the federation, but that Corvette is on the list. I forgot about the smuggling job, I will have to build a ship for that. DBS and DBX apparently have the lowest heat output which could be good for this role.

I hear the Alliance Cs are made for Thargoid slaying.

Currently I mostly use just 3 ships:

Chieftain for combat
DBX for getting around
Python for delivery missions

The rest are just gathering dust atm.

Imp Eagle can be made into a racer. FDL is the go to for PvP, but isn't the only option, but that's a choice only you can make. I'm going to recommend a Clipper for a pirate ship, if you have the rank. For trade, most choose T9 or Cutter, depends on your budget, and whether you can put up with flying the T9.

I just traded my AspX for a DBX for the Perseus Reach Expedition (small ships only). I'm getting 68.2ly on the DBX, however I like the AspX better because of fuel scooping. The DBX has the same tank as an AspX, however it can only fit a 4A fuel scoop (342kg/s) and the AspX can fit a 6A fuel scoop (878kg/s). So, the AspX can refill from empty in 36.4 seconds while it takes the DBX 93.6 seconds.

I'll keep the DBX forever since that will be the ship that completed that expedition, however, I'll equip and engineer an AspX for exploration after I get back.

You're right, any suggestions for a ship? I could refit the type 10, but then what would be my Panite double hotspot miner?

From what I understand, an FDL equipped with AX gear is the ideal Xeno hunter.
For laser mining, I use a T9.

My fleet I actually use:
DBX - Exclusive for ratting Perseus Reach
Vulture (one in Colonia, one in Bubble) - NPC assassination/massacre missions, CZ
T9 - Laser mining/trading
T7 - Cargo missions in Colonia
Krait MkII - All purpose mission ship in Colonia
Python - Core mining

Stuff just sitting there:
Imperial Clipper
Imperial Courier

I plan on getting an FDL for AX. And I'm dying to figure out what I should use my Python for. I just love how it looks and wish it were more maneuverable.

Combat:
Corvette - Heavy PvE
Challenger - PvE
Gunship - PvE
Chieftain - PvE
Vulture - PvE

Cutter - PvP
Corvette - PvP

Trade:
Cutter - Bulk / Passenger
Python - Medium Pad

Exploration/Ferry/Taxi:
Anaconda - Extreme Range / Ferry
DBX - Taxi / Ferry / Long Range
Dolphin - Medium/Long range.

Mining:
Python

Various:
Eagle (very fast) - Wake Scanning
Cobra MKIII - nostalgia
Sidewinder - nostalgia

Module Storage / Mothballed:
Vipers - Many
Dropship x 2
Anaconda
FDL
FAS
Mamba

Just some examples:

Bubble Taxi - Hauler (nice range and very cheap to transfer... pops on first PvP interaction though)

Mats Gatherer - Orca (very survivable, a joy in supercruise)

AX Vessel - Krait MkII (you can kill a cyclops reliably with it, or lots of scouts…)

Core Miner - Phantom (very nimble, survivable, can kill NPCs coming after you)

Rescue Vessel - Type-7 (apply red paintjob and RESCUE as ID)

PvP Pirate - Challenger (just remember to jump away if a FdL tries to pull you 😆 )

All my ships with the exception of the Hauler are ships I regularly fly in open and they are reasonably gank-proof.
Even the Hauler I fly in open, but when it pops it pops… fast :ROFLMAO:

Thanks for all the suggestions, until my navy ranks improve, I think I will build; a T9 trade ship, a DBX smuggler and a FDL thargoid hunter.

I've noticed no love for the Beluga? I think it's an awesome ship, even if it does run hot and too big for the mail slot.

ill share my fleet with you for inspiration;

Current Fleet;
Dolphin - Exploration and planetary mat gatherer
Dolphin - CZ fighter
Dolphin - Deep core miner and USS gatherer (lack of C1 seismic charges for the former)
Dolphin - Laser miner
Dolphin - Dust gatherer
Dolphin - Mission runner
Dolphin - Deep space explorer
Dolphin - Vip passenger ship
Dolphin - Racer
Dolphin - PvP

in fact its all the same ship i just swap the modules out, occasionally I rent a dirty Orca by the hour for secret liaisons with seismic charges so i can go deep core mining

Roles are what you assign them to be. True - some hulls are better in given role than other but you can't say that X ship is for Y.

For example I had FDL as a cargo mission runner. Quite interesting build it was. Recently I turned her into explorer ship but low jump range and ambitious goal (over-ambitious tbh) made me re-evaluate that idea.

Imperial Clipper is awesome explorer, took me to Colonia at one occasion.

Generally I like to create not entirely obvious builds. Almost everytime there is a better build involving different hull and performing at least twice as good as mine. But since role is an outfitting function.. I only wish we had it even further - role IS a result of what you put into the hull and end result would be competitive. True freedom. Strip naked FDL of its offensive capabilities, put exploration gear inside, mining stuff... you name it. That would be nice.

hear hear, if only there were C1 of everything knocking about to enable such a delightful utopia.
