Ship scanning?

ok lads and lasses......another noob question coming.....

is there a way to stop people scanning your cargo?

i have just done a mission that required me to grab some documents from a crash site (or something along them lines) and it was classed as "illicit cargo".....when i was taking it back to the station to complete the mission, on the way into the station i was scanned and subsequently handed a fine.....not a big issue as i was still in profit but it got me thinking - there must be something in the game you can purchase to hide what you have in your hold - is this possible?

thanks in advance!

You can avoid them by getting out of the range of the scanner by boosting away.

If you're Docking with illicit cargo, and you get through the mail slot before the scan completes, the scan, for some reason stops.

Use this to your advantage. :)

There are a couple ways that I think most people avoid scans.

1) Silent running: keeping your ship heat levels to a minimum will make it very difficult for a ship to be able to scan you. I have never messed with this but I have seen it in effect. I have tried to scan some people and could not until I was very very close to them.

2) Speed: this is my preferred way. Coming into a station fast will prevent anyone from scanning you on the way in. I call these "hot" landings. You will be breaking the speed limit so other than needing to not crash your ship, you cannot hit anyone either or you could risk problems with the space station. I would come in around 130/120 ish and typically never get scanned. You can of course slow down right before you enter the station, but any lingering will increase the risk of being scanned.

There is no way to hide your cargo. As others have stated you can evade scans, but once you're being scanned unless you can get out of range before the scan finishes, you'll get fined if carrying anything illegal.

Ultimately, it's one of the inherent risks of carrying illicit goods.

With direct reference to your question, they've nailed it above.
I try and get my ship lined up with the station entrance before dropping out of Supercruise. I'm still hit and miss with this, but basically approach the station so that your ship is between the station and the body it is orbiting and you SHOULD be on the correct side of the station when you drop out of Supercruise (easy to find a video on this on youtube). Then, as stated above, speed is your friend. If i think i'm going too slow, or make an error (yes, i suck) i will then engage Silent Running, but only when i'm already lined up to enter, and turn Silent Running off once i'm just through the entrance.

I have a related tip/question. I heard that using chaff can interrupt a scan. I think i have done this in the past, but not tried for a while. Can anyone confirm if this works?

I was about to dock at a station and noticed the imperial slaves I was carrying were illicit cargo, having moved from Empire space.

So I lined up myself with the station entrance without being scanned and then pushed the throttle. Hit the brakes when inside and the auto docking took over. Silent running would be fun to try as well.

While you cannot prevent a scan once it has started, you can do a few things to limit the chances of being scanned. The main ones have already been mentioned. One thing I do (if I am doing a smuggling run ) is to stay 10KM away from the station until I can line up directly with the mail slot (along the axis of the station rotation). Then, when I head in, I am less likely to be scanned, as the Authority vessels orbit the stations around their axis, leaving a small window of opportunity.

Stay 8.5km away from the station and line up with the mail slot. 4 pips to eng, 2 pips to sys, put your throttle in the blue and boost. As soon as you get within 7.5km, boost and immediately request to dock (be quick). You should be able to hit one more boost around the 5km mark (depending on your ship). Line up with mailslot so you can squeeze through (and pray a type 9 doesn't try to leave). If you are going through the slot way too fast deploy your landing gear after you get through, throw 4 pips to sys, and spin around so you can use your thrust to help slow down before you hit the wall. Your shields should be able to take the hit anyways, but better to be safe than sorry. If they do manage to start a scan, you will be in the slot before the alert clears off your HUD and it will get canceled. After a few runs, you will get the hang of it. It also adds some fun and excitement to the mailslot.

Boost into station at max speed. Nothing like entering a station at 400 m/s, yeeeehaaa! Although I hear 200 m/s is all you need. Just don't try to do this in a fully laden anaconda with D thrusters as I learned the hard way.

ok so my plan of going in slow was the complete opposite of what i should be doing!

thanks for the help (more questions coming soon! haha!!)
