Ship Shop - Real Money

Hey guys, bought Elite: Dangerous yesterday and i love it! Now i also ordered Flightstick :)

Anyway, i found out, this game was on Kickstarter and offered "Starting Package"( Like start with Cobra ETC ETC).
I want to ask if you are planning to add such option into shop.

I wouldn't mind to spend reasonable amount of money for it. ( Hate Sidewinder - it's so ugly, i cried my eyes out when i had to play with it for a WHOLE day ) - Now i have Viper ....... love it!!! :)

I wouldn't have an issue if FD started to offer the KS perks on the shop.

I wouldn't either, really. Having seen the reactions of backers on the forums in the past, when things like this were mentioned, I can't help but to want to run for cover whenever the subject comes up. :D

You're in a Viper. You've pretty much reached the stage of the game where the kickstarter free ships perk loses its benefit.

But anyway, the devs said no to this sort of thing (a very assertive no).

Honestly, it's not really a perk I'd be interested in either. I do think it, or really any number of things could be added to the store, and may well be eventually. As long as it's nothing grossly unfair which allows people to buy massive advantages over unpaying players, I see any addition to the store as a benefit.

Not sure about beta/alpha backers, but there was an offering for pre-order where you got a Free Eagle, aka Freagle, and a paintjob for a couple of ships and a decal for your ship.

I don't ever see them selling ships for real money. It defeats the point of the game.

Then again in ways other changes made things much easier than they were at release. Nothing really wrong with that, sounds like you have done well rather quickly!

Earn the rest like everyone else has Commander! :)

Fly safe!

I have all the kickstarter options and I haven't used another starter ship - even when I have clear saved
.
Flyin a sidewinder is an important part of development yes OP you have a viper but you have made your mistakes in a sidewinder (there are still more mistakes out there for you to make - don't worry) personally I think there is a great deal of knowledge to be gained from that sidewinder that shouldn't be underestimated
.
A Cobra is a different beastie to fly you need to have good skills to move up - if you are a pilot you don't jump straight into a F14 Tomcat, you build up through single engine props to jets to multi engine and so on.
.
Time in a side winder isn't wasted and although you hate it now there is nothing like jumping back in one and messing around in a sidewinder for an hour or so

I have the KS options, and they're nice, but no real advantage. New players can earn a Cobra of their own within a few days, so its not a huge head start.

The early ships are some of the most fun to play anyway. I loved the Eagle, and I'm still in my Cobra.

While I doubt it is likely to happen, I wouldn't have a problem with it. Certainly at this point in the game (several months after release) it doesn't make a lot of difference if you can start in a Cobra or a Sidewinder - there are thousands of players out there with big ships so there is no real advantage to be gained there. The real reward of being a Kickstarter backer was that the game got made (well, the boxed edition was quite pretty too, but it doesn't really serve much purpose). :)

It would send the game down a dark route if they started selling ships. (Even if it's some "starter pack").
If they did that, then they would be going against everything that they have said in previous statements, which they would only be selling cosmetic items.

Ship rewards are, well rewards. They are to thank people for adopting into the game early, help with development by spending more money, and help by getting involved on the forums, and providing feedback.

Now I'm not saying "They shouldn't do it because it's unfair to KS backers" - I'm saying that they shouldn't because it's aiming towards a pay-to-win shop.

There are only a few things you can buy in game with credits. Ships, modules, weapons and commodities. Now if they started selling one of those things with real money, then they are lowering any need for people to even get credits.

You know how the road starts... Starter pack with a cobra. Then later "Advanced pack" with a python... and further down the line "elite pack" with an anaconda.

It's not good.

This is one of the reasons that I am not buying into Star Citizen. That game is extremely pay to win, where you can buy ships with real money, and credits. I don't want Elite to go down that route.

Been covered before. Terrible idea and put of character with the game. Please use search before posting. Your new ideas have probably been thought of and covered I depth over the last year. Have fun I the viper you earned through playing the game.

To clarify a little on my opinion, I see no harm in having an eagle, or even a cobra or hauler available on the store. As someone pointed out, it only takes a few days of play to work up that far anyhow, so it's not like it'd be any significant advantage. I think cobra would be the absolute maximum I'd want to see there, and even that'd have a hefty price tag.

Anything bigger, and you might as well start selling Elite status on the store, and 'YOU WON THE GAME' badges for $100.

That doesn't mean there aren't all manner of cool, non game-breaking perks you couldn't add to the store. More decals! Paint packs for several different ships, instead of six for one ship! Different outfits for your commander (this surely has to become a thing as/when we get the 'getting up out of your chair' DLC)! A Fourth Thing, which is eluding me right now because it's almost 3am!

I can see it now: " Be Ship-Shape with the Ship-Shop". It has a certain ring to it. Well, I'm one of those that technically paid for a starter ship, only to dump it. What that makes me, is undoubtly not very effective. But I'm in the "it is all about the journey crowd". Up to a certain point. When finally seated in luxury, the journey can take a hike! So in the end, we will meet on the same terms. That's life... as we know it... ;)

Buying access to ships with money creates a precedent for a whole raft of 'pay to win' type requests which most forum members don't want and certainly the devs have said will never happen.

The only perk I use regularly is the 10% discount at founders world - but there are better discounts out there for certain ships all the time (alioth for instance for the asp) and CG rewards have seem me get a clipper hull and a python at greater than 10% anyway (10% of modules is still handy tho).

If this was only available to KS backers, I'd feel a bit uncomfortable about it, but it is obtainable in-game also by becoming Elite. And it feels the right scale to me - nice, but far from overpowering.

tbh - if you were wanting to buy vipers and cobras from a shop, it probably means you haven't put that many hours into the game yet. Once you get the hang of it, it's quite easy to earn the money for those just from BB missions, or by doing some rares trading in a hauler, or bounty hunting in an eagle (though you have to pick your targets a bit more carefully in that than in the viper for sure). Why buy those ships then discover that the game isn't for you? By the time you're sure it is, you probably have earned them in game already.

ps. I didn't even realise I had a free eagle for several days by which time I'd already bought myself a hauler.
