Ships Ship size vs weapon size: what do we actually know?

CMDRs,

I am trying to understand the way the damage penalty works for smaller weapons vs larger ships.

There are two hypotheses I can think of (maybe there are others):

(a) There are only three ship classes (small, medium, and large), governed by the pad the ship needs to land, and it is the case that a class 1 weapon has a penalty vs medium and large ships, a class 2 weapon has a penalty vs large ships, and a class 3 weapon has no penalty to any ship currently in game.

If this is true, are huge weapons firing on a large ship as effective as large weapons? That is, an FDL firing a class 3 cannon from the bottom slot on an anaconda does as much damage as firing a class 4 cannon? Or are there differences in weapon damage on top of the ship size penalty (I remember Mike Evans I think said there is not).

(b) There are some hard coded size values for each ship that govern damage, e.g. maybe a python is "larger" than an asp even though both need a medium pad. Then these values nerf an undersized weapon in some proportional way.

---

Has any testing been done on this? There are some interesting consequences of (a) if it is true, for example an FDL outshoots a vulture 2 to 1 against any combat ship except clipper or anaconda, even if we ignore the bottom hardpoint.

Yes, the designers are notoriously tight-lipped about actual mechanics. The second thread, though, is leading me to believe (b) is more likely to be right. There are lots of other things about ships that edshipyard doesn't show. For example, the FDL retains much more of its maneuverability and thrust at 0 pips to ENG, compared to a python. This seems to be hardcoded, and does not show up as a stat anywhere.

It's a shame the devs are so tight lipped about many aspects in this game. I would love to be able to create crew operating manuals for some of the bigger ships. At the very least it would be great to have third party tools to analyze telemetry so we can get hard figures. It's all guess work at the moment, we are basically test pilots. We don't even know the exact dimensions of our ships :/
