Proposal Discussion Ship Sublight Velocity Limit permanent?

Hello Elite forum. I'm fairly new to this game here. First thread I've made here. I am curious about the design for the ship handling on the sublight engines are. I understand now that the relative velocity to the "environment" you are in is capped at around 500 m/s for any ship, unless you engage super cruise or the hyper-drive of course.

I was wondering what the plans were as far as that design aspect goes. Is there a more realistic approach could be taken in this regard such as the removal of the cap, or perhaps just set the velocity cap on sublight engines to 0.99c.

Could turn on an optional safety that could be adjusted. Turn off the safety, and be more careful flying eh?

The 500m/s cap is a technical limitation due to the fact ED is a multiplayer online game.

Network lag causes other ships to jerk and dance around. It also cause issues when it appears you've hit a ship, yet it takes mo damage, or you dodge a shot, yet take damage.

These effects get worse the higher the speeds. FD have capped the speeds at 500m/s to keep the undesirable effects to a minimum.

There are three main reasons for having a speed limit while flying without frame shifting.

1. Network high level updates in a twitch based MP centered game.
2. Design decisions concerning how a dogfight should look and feel.
3. A firm resolve to elevate gameplay above realism regarding the flight model the game has.

FDEV have confirmed that they can up the speed considerably without point 1 becoming a problem, and maybe we will see something like that when planetary approach and entry becomes an issue down the line.

For 2, FDEV are making a game they like themselves to play, and want to instill a certain feel and look into its flight model, especially when dogfighting and multiplayer balance is concerned. Some people don't like that, its not changing though. They are adamant about this.

For 3 (which is partly connected to 2), having weapons that fire up to 3km away and then ships that can fly around with no speed limits and only soft acceleration limits is an exercise in futility (in this game, others can work with that by changing a lot of the other aspects in flying ~ but then we are not talking about ED anymore but about something else). Realism or "realism" is not and will not be an issue for FDEV when actual gameplay complexity, feel and balance is concerned. They want cinematic star-wars type dogfights in this game, and that is what we are going to get.

Hope that helps, cheers..C:
