Engineering a ship can be a time consuming process. See a lot of complaints here about the material grind. Now, I personally do not mind that part...it seems a fair amount of time for the amount of improvement gained to performance.
Where I see an issue is that I have no way to know for sure if the particular modification and experimental I do will be to my liking. Right now, the only way to find that out is to gather all the materials and do the engineering to find out. Very disappointing when I finish and decide...I want to change it to some other engineering.
I suggest we get a test simulator where we can build a ship with whatever modules we want and apply whatever engineering we want and then...well....test fly it (and test combat it). It is the far future, we have space travel...but we don't have a simulator to test things out? Seems to be a sensible thing to add to the game to me and just might make at least some of the folks who complain about engineering a little less unhappy.
