So I think it make sense from a game balance perspective that ships can't target and stomp ground based targets at will, otherwise there would be no point getting out of the ship. And given that most of the weapons are designed to damage ships, it does make sense that they don't work all that well on people.
That said, it would be cool if ground based players were able to coordinate with ships to bring fire in- something like a hand held designator or marker grenade that would allow ship's systems to target specific points would make for some really cool tactical play where a player could infiltrate a base and mark a group of enemy or a problematic turret for their team member in a ship to carry out a gun run or rocket strike, but would also have to make sure the air defence turrets are sabotaged.
Obviously this is a down the line thing, but figured it was worth mentioning.
