Ship to ship cargo transfer when changing ships

I've tried storing ships before with large amounts of limpets on them, like in my mining ship. Had 512 limpets, game would not let me store it. I had to sell them back in order to store the ship.

Then recently, I added a repair limpet controller to a DB Explorer, added 3 Limpets to the cargo hold for later use by the repair controller. Later on I then switched to another one of my ships and BAM! Those 3 limpets show up in the cargo hold of my Python????

Seems that they transferred from the Explorer to the Python when I changed ships. I didn't know this was possible. This brings up a question as I'm thinking this could be a useful benefit....

How much cargo will automatically transfer when changing ships? Seems there may be a specific number there.

Thanks in advance!

What everyone has said is correct.
All your cargo will automatically transfer to your new ship, unless your new ship cannot physically carry it, at which point the game will tell you that you can’t swap ships.

Your own Fleet Carrier is a good way around this. You can transfer cargo in to your Fleet Carrier, and vice-versa, as you wish, up to a max of 25,000 tons…

Thanks all! This is great news. I can then transfer all the stuff I mined to my transport ship (to be built) and haul it longer distances.

This is great! Thanks!

A very old and oft repeated request has been for limpets to be considered "ammunition" of a controller, much like an AFMU or actual hardpoint. This would solve a very large portion of the problems with all limpet controllers as well as the infamous cargo problem of swapping and/or forgetting your limpets.

It's been asked for many times. Until we had fleet carriers, it was impossible. Now it's possible, if you have a fleet carrier. :)
But this is not what I ask for. I have a carrier and is fortunate to find ways to get that rich, but most people don't. I don't understand why o e could not leave cargo with a ship. Depending on what the cargo is there could be expiry dates on, e.g. fruits and veg should have a 3 day expiry, gold etc never.

What this will help is for those fetch me stuff and 5min later btw 9 pirates are coming after you missions. These commanders can then change over the T9 for the fdl without losing the cargo. It just makes sense.

In anyone in Frontier reading this?

I can work for Feontier for 1 week and give them 50 good ideas which will bring in many millions if they would be willing to implement these. And probably many other people feel like this.

This is, incidentally, one of the reasons you are not allowed to offload mission cargo, even to a carrier. Potentially having to deal with the villains who want your cargo is the main challenge element of those missions.
