So I posted this as a reply to the main, stickied thread but I figure it will just get lost in the multitude of responses so here goes:
Did no-one ever think that 'ship transfer' could be done on a 'Knights Templar' style bank basis?
Basically if a certain 'faction' (federation/alliance/empire perhaps?) is both where you are now and where your ship you wish to transfer is AND the station you are at has stock of the correct ship/equipment you can effectively 'trade in' your ship far away and swap it for an identical one at your current starport.
This is not only completely plausible but has basis in historical reality AND has sufficient limitation to not be game breaking BUT still is a useful feature.
Why is this not what is being done?
