In truth, what OP suggests beats what Sandro is going to do.
Completely.

In terms of armchair game designing of a single piece of game mechanic, isolated, without using any real play data whatsoever, taking into consideration ONLY the lore part and the cool factor, sure. It beats Sandro's idea.

However in terms of an actual lead game designer, who has to consider this mechanic's synergy with ever other mechanic in the game, who has the actual statistics from play data gathered from the actual players over the course of one and a half years, who has the technical knowledge, the expertise AND the knowledge about undisclosed future updates to the game to make the decision, coupled with the ability to make later changes to the way the mechanic works after it's added to the game...

OP's idea is a convoluted mess, which has the potential to cause much unnecessary tears, rage, I quit posts, threats, claims of incompetence and as a result bad social media image along the way.

None of us has to consider any of these, nor can we, being unable to get the real data to base decisions on. Sandro has to consider his livelihood for the foreseeable future, which depends on the success of the game he is designing. I would hazard to guess he isn't keen on looking for a new job instead of making sure the one he has now lasts him a while.

Ship transport pilots would need to be bonded. This means that, in the case of ship damage or destruction, they would need to be good for the replacement costs plus interest as well as a premium for any engineered components that need to be re-engineered.

So, you pay a transport pilot to bring your engineered Vulture to Jaques (bad idea). He totals it and now pays the insurance for a new ship with identical--but not engineered--components and pays interest and a premium to make re-engineering your components worthwhile (which sucks).

You have two options:
1. Have this ship sent to you again (which may not make it again) or
2. just take the money and buy one elsewhere.

This means that it's a big risk to have a unique (engineered) ship transported.

This also means you could make these jobs available to CMDRs. You could pick up a job on the missions board to transport an Orca to a station 500LY away. It's a chance to fly a ship you wouldn't normally buy, and you would of course be risking the price of the insurance of the ship (+interest&premiums). You could even try to make the trip more lucrative by taking some other missions in the direction of transport.
