Newcomer / Intro [SHIP UPGRADE] Its that time...

Hi all,

The time has now come for me to look into a ship upgrade. So far I have narrowed it down to 3 choices - Adder, Hauler or Eagle.

I have been watching a number of Youtube videos on the ship choices I need a little bit of guidance here.

I have Two options here:

Option A : Save and Get an Adder
Right now I have about 50k credits and will be eligible to make my Hauler or Eagle purchase. But I am also considering waiting till I reach about 90K with my sidewinder and buy an Adder straight away. Is this a wise thing to do?

Option B : Buy a Hauler now and Upgrade to an Adder shortly
Question 1: : If I do buy a Hauler now, will I be able to "trade in" my hauler and get an adder? Or will I need to save up from scratch and get my Adder?

Question 2 : If I can trade-in for my hauler how much resale value % will I get?

Upgrade Question
Also I upgraded my FSD in my Sidewinder to a Class C - Can I take that out and put it in my Hauler or Adder?

Appreciate some responses and thank you in advance :D

When you sell a ship you get 90% if the purchase price. When you sell a component, you get 100%.
So make sure you sell, or downgrade to the cheapest all slots before selling.

Worth it? That's entirely up to you, even if I had an opinion, I wouldnt give one, play as you wish.

The number of a component is the size, the letter is quality. Can't remember the sizes of fsd in the various ship, try edshipyard.com

Regardless, you can downgrade back to an E before selling and get your money black

if you like combat, try the eagle. Its extremely agile. Its almost too sensitive. If you wanna haul, then the choice is obvious. If you enjoy combat, I highly recommend the Viper after the eagle. Its a huge upgrade

you are choosing between three different types of ships: combat (eagle), trade (hauler) and explore (adder).

choice is easy if you know what role you want to play. my advice would be, be patient, save some more credits and buy a cobra, an excellent starting multipurpose ship.

Since I have just been there - I want straight for the adder. Basically, when I reached 50k, I travelled to where I wanted to set up mining camp (Umaitis) - but you could also travel to Leesti for RES hunting or something like that.
Anyway, if you scan the systems you jump in, you get about 400 (just seeing the sun) to several 1000 if you actually use the scanner to discover all the planets. This will net you enough for the adder. The adder is useful if you do not know what you want to do yet - you can mine well, can do some light combat, can trade.
Otherwise, it is (for me) rather forgettable, I upgraded to the Cobra and never looked back. If you know you want to trade or res hunt, get the hauler (then upgrade either to the cobra or the T-7 later) or the Eagle (upgrade later to Viper and Vulture).

Personally, I like jack of all trades, and my purchases so far reflect that.

I did Option B: bought a Hauler, realised I had done a mistake and switched to an Adder as fast as I could. If I had to start again, I'd do Option A: straight from Sidewinder to Adder. Adder is a good multipurpose ship, like a mini-Asp.

Hi,
In the same situation I bought the Adder because it can fulfill any role and it's a great ship. Its only flaw is the narrow view from inside the cockpit but you get used to it.
Go for it ;)

Since I do mostly trading, when I was new to the game, I went to a hauler, then an Adder and liked them both...but Eagle>>>Viper is the way to go if you like fighting....and for an excellent all-around ship that is both fairly cheap and a sheer joy to fly, go for a Cobra when you can afford it..it's an outstanding ship that's well loved by those who fly it....I still have one setting in storage even though I've long since moved on to much bigger and more expensive ships

Hi all, thanks again for all your feedback just thought I provide you all with an update on what route I finally took in terms of my ship upgrade.

After much thought and deliberation, I finally went ahead with...surprise surprise and Eagle! The rationale behind the decision was simple - given the fact that the power play update is coming soon, I figure it would be best for me to eventually learn how to engage in proper combat. I gotta admit I did take a risk in choosing the eagle - I remember the first few times I had the "power offline" situation soon after upgrading my eagle with the 3 small mounts ( one burst laser, one gimballed multi canon, and one missile rack coupled with a Kill Warrant Scanner) and it just frustrated me. However after reading up on the forums on my predicament I was able to solve my issues.

The result - well on my first bounty hunting I managed to get a collect close to 50K in bounty money in 1 hour and an additional 20K bounty hunting money from the bulletin board (for the same mission - so totalling to 70K in just one trip!) - with that kinda money there's no turning bad I guess :D

In conclusion I feel the game is bit skewed towards bounty hunting as its definitely the fastest (may not be fulfilling to some) way to get money. Do you guys feel the same?

A couple of points to note
1) When you upgrade your ship BE SURE TO check your power capacity - it will have different values when weapons are deployed vs. when its not - make sure you check on this
2) Bounty hunting is not as difficult as what you would think it is - I was very afraid to go into bounty hunting and was putting it off but as long as you keep in the blue throttle zone while dogfighting you will be fine!
3) Lasers are useless once shields are down so make sure you have kinetic weapons (cannons, muticannons etc.) as well

Must say, seeing the Eagle in action. I'm very keen on it, especially with spare shield boosts in hairy situations.

You make some good points but lasers are not totally useless when a target's shileds are down - they just take a little longer to do the necessary damage. I use only beams to take out smaller ships such as sidewinders - they do the job and it saves on multi-cannon ammo, which means you can stay out hunting for longer.
Have some rep for doing so well so quickly.

Just another update:

1) I am now already using a Viper - somewhat not a smart move - here's another tip. Don't rush into upgrading your ships :/ I should have kept my eagle for more time to come :(

Oh well lessons learnt :)

It's always a good idea when getting a new ship to have enough credits left to do some basic upgrades, eg FSD power distributor, weapons, and of course cover the rebuy cost.

This ..... over + over

To many people overstretch and fall
flat on the ass.

If you are looking at a Cobra ... have @ least 1.5 mill Cr's .... T6 .... 3 mill

BEFORE upgrading

Go for the hauler. It will make you cash, you can explore in it too and it's fast enough to get you out of interdictions. I've got a Lakon 9 and a Python but often go back to a hauler for lots of different jobs like delivery missions, exploration and to be left alone when smuggling in open play.
