Ship variants

Ship variants (used ships)

I've saw the post about a combat python variant and got to thinking this would be a start but wouldn't we actually prefer to find modified or second hand ships and variants - i.e. ships where internals have different configurations or some internals are fixed - i.e. a module which can't be changed - condition could be significantly worse (or better!) - the reason I'm thinking along these lines is primarily for newer players - they could find a 'bargain' where the cheaper price is offset by the quality or limitations (e.g. C3 Power plant is fused and cannot be replaced or one internal module is damaged beyond repair etc).

This could even be done with entries on the bulletin board - "Used ship for sale, good workhorse, seen plenty of action, 32k ly on the clock, bargain at 125,000". Rep with the sellers faction could affect cost too.

I'm actually surprised this hasn't been implemented before (or perhaps it's on the list?) - used car salesman ... I mean used ship salesman would surely have a place in the galaxy? Thoughts?

I belive something from back in the kickstarter was said about having second hand ships, they would have something wrong with them tho, like listed to the left, or had intermittent PP problems etc
Hopefuly the idea was shelved with the waste paper

I liked that idea.

To OP: Yes.

Might well have been in the kickstarter ... I know the idea of a used ship wouldn't suit all but it's just a bit of harmless immersion .... whilst we're at it - lets add some ship graveyards :)

Yeah, ship and station scrapyards being a rare thing you could find in the bubble would be pretty awesome. Might even have a couple "watch dogs" guarding them, or so on.

And along the same lines .... after a particular combat zone (e.g. community goals?) we could have a debris field :)

Nice idea, but then you'd have to make repair costs a bit more significant (otherwise you'd just repair everything out of hand), and (stretching slightly here) introduce proper wear and tear to all ships so that the re-sell price drops with prolonged use (I personally think this should happen* -- heh, I can hear the screams now...)

the thing is though this would only be interesting for a little while given how quick it can be to rack up credits enough for most ships...

(* but also allow DIY repair of ALL parts of the ship)

Not sure repair costs would need to be increased (though I would support that to a degree) ... my thoughts were that the 'permanent' modules either could not be repaired beyond a certain point and could not be replaced (without substantial cost?).

I would like to see re-sell prices affected over time though - perhaps a regular overhaul would reduce the trend. Would really like to see ships with 'character' - think Millenium Falcon and it's Hyperdrive :) The difficult thing is what would you do when that ship gets destroyed? Exempt from insurance - i.e. ship is lost no replacement... or perhaps something of comparable price given (for like-cost) or even a ship with potentially some other issue or restriction.

I could imagine something like the OP with a (hypotetical) "Ship Names"-update.
Mhmmmm... ships with... "character"! :)
And a legacy!

I still belive that FD is planning something bigger with ship names (very much according to the DDF). Just being able to name your ship seems to be such a simple programming task that I am very confident FD would have implemented this since long otherwise.
The parallel: passenger missions. Passengers could have been just another kind of commodity. They aren't, as FD will dedicate a whole update to them with (presumably) a much more sophisticated game-play!
