My idea is not simple yet it is probably an interesting concept.
I had a talk with a trucker who is working with a company. The company has a novel approach to employment, the trucker works with the company for a set amount of time under contract and once that contract expires the trucker gets to keep their truck. There was more but it got me thinking, what if it was adapted for ED.
In game the player accepts a quest line that at the end the player gets to keep the ship that they use.
The quest would start with the player accepting it.
Second stage would be the player getting on loan a ship (if it is destroyed the insurance comes straight from the player).
The player would fly from station to station for a while and at the end of the quest line the player is allowed to keep their ship. I'm thinking for balance and reward purpose the ship should be a Type 6 at the minimum.
The rules of the quest line are the player can not decide the cargo that the ship delivers but instead is required to haul cargo from one station to the other, the player is given a fixed amount per transaction and each ship is required to have a minimum capacity.
Background wise it would mean that ED would have dedicated shipping companies.
In addition if the player can build reputation with the company and initate a second quest line to get a Type 7 and the final quest line for a type 9.
It would make getting a starter hauler easier but at the same time it would build a mulch-staged quest line for beginning players who want a ship.
