Shipping Lanes... Wuzzat?

I just got back from the Distant Worlds Expedition a while ago, so maybe these have been there for a while.

What are these? You see them in your lower left nav screen. It says the name of the system you're in or going to and 'shipping lane.'

I tried the search, but like with all message boards in the known galaxy... it sucks.

It means you're on one of the direct routes between the Nav beacon and the planets of the system. You should take it as a warning of potential piracy - NPC Pirates will hang around shipping lanes for victims. The risk of NPC interdictions seems to decrease if you avoid shipping lanes, so fly a banana route to your chosen destination.

Word?

That's pretty awesome.

Repped.

Do all the traders in their t-6/7/9s complaining about the amount of interdictions know this?

(I'm begging for an interdiction usually!)

That was buried somewhere in the Patchnotes for V2.1.

Primariliy, they mean Signal Sources are affected by them, as not all types spawn everywhere anymore fully RNG.
Their archetype is now tied to their location and that guides which types primarly spawn at any location in a System.

Unsure if being on a Shipping lane affects anything else. Can't recall reading anything to that tune.

V2.1 Patchnote Details said:
- Add traffic density system for generating USSs
- Shipping lanes are created between the primary star, stations, and planets with settlements. Shipping lanes that are too similar to others, or too short, are removed
- Traffic density is calculated based on shipping lane, station and settled planet proximity. This traffic density value alters the probability of USSs
- Balance pass on low level scenarios that can be found as USS in shipping lanes. More Threat 1 opportunities for low ranking combat ship

Occupied systems are now separated in these sections to give you more sense of your location and potential events around it - interdictions, signal sources, etc. Nice addition.

We theorized that at least in high sec systems, system security should arrive faster if you get interdicted in a shipping lane since they are usually patrolling the lanes. I didn't have time to test this out yet due to work but it seems logical to me.

It certainly does affect the spawning of signal sources though, of that I'm sure.

Regarding interdictions, it could work differently in systems with different security ratings so maybe go on the lane in a high sec system but avoid it in a low sec? I don't know yet really but we'll have to try and see.

Well Hell.

There's a few cmdrs that have been playing this for a while that don't know exactly what these are!

Some people might find that annoying. For me, it's kind of the reason I've been so obsessed with this game for so long.

Thanks for digging out the details - I was working from memory :)

You also get specific materials in shipping lanes required for Engineers, although I have not looked into this too deeply.

I've tried several times to "nail" a Shipping lane (1400Ls distant Station), but with little success.

I can only assume trailing a Trader NPC headed for the Station could be used to place the own Ship onto one?

I think a HUD toggle to show the lanes, like the orbit rings, would be nice. Have them look kinda like the trade route lines on the galaxy map connecting the system bodies...

Oooh yes please!

Some good info here, thanks to everyone who's contributing what they know!

Any chance of a dev popping in to add a little more?

Just go directly between the main star and the station. There are usually NPC ships there too but manually going between them so that they'll sit on the same plane (your sensor display) works too.

I'm going to put this here, in hopes it brings a definitive (dev) definition of what 'shipping lanes' do.

I would like that to be my legacy.

This tune will get them to answer... you watch:
