Here is a suggestion to making our ships seem more real and to help with making exploration more interesting. That said I know that a lot of people are most likely going be against this but here it goes anyway.
Scanners, scanners, scanners. I know people hate time syncs in the game, but for me I feel that if a want to go out and explore… I’d like to be able to run a full battery of tests on things. Perhaps create an Optional Internal Module called the Sensor Suite. Once one of these is installed you will then be able to mount special sensors to your utility mounts. A few examples of these would be sensors capable of deciphering a chemical makeup of a star, radiation output of star, thermal output of a star, or perhaps age of the star.
With these sensors on utility mounts you don’t need to be facing the target. Simply have it selected and be within the appropriate range of the scanner you are trying to use. Some scans may take several minutes, but the payout on a more detailed analysis would effectively double or triple the monetary value of the scans. This could make spending time near neutron stars more interesting as well, instead of going… oooo pretty, lets scan it and jump.
Perhaps also equip a planetary shuttle, (I know we can’t land aired on planets) but the NPC’s don’t know that. Send an away team to do more testing of local flora and animals to see if they can restock supplies on the ship.
This will partly play into my next thing of making our ships more real. Our crew… And I am not talking about our NPC pilots we hire. Rumor has it that the Federal Corvette has a population that of a small city… yet we have no we to interact with the crew.
Now, I am not proposing space legs or being able to move about the ship. But instead add somewhere around 6-8 modules similar to the planetary approach suite that do not add weight to the ship, mainly because they are already there, that would allow us to carry “x” amount of water and “x” amount of food in storage containers, perhaps have different levels of mess halls, and recreation areas, or workout areas. Have an on board medical clinic.
How well we manage these things will effectively correlate to overall crew happiness and effectiveness. Keep them feed, with plenty of water and activities to do (working out, recreation, or just doing their jobs like scanning things or manning the guns) will keep the moral high.
0-25% moral = -10% reduction in effectiveness in all areas of ship
25-50% moral = 5% reduction in effectiveness in all areas of ship
50-100% moral = 0% reduction in effectiveness in all areas of ship
Just some thoughts… Not sure how hard it would be to implement. It would be kind of similar to passengers but you crew does not get to make demands.
