Ships Need More Customization

When I mentioned more ship customization in the title, I didn't mean cosmetic. I mean physical. Give the ship more personality that fits your play style. Right now we have a "stepping stone" model that all MMORPG's like to follow. "Get more money, get better gear". Now while I agree with this model to an extent, let me explain why it isn't necessarily the best model for this game, especially whenever there is a level of skill involved in dogfighting.

One of the main reasons why this model will eventually not work, is because at some point, everyone is going to have the highest ship possible. Everyone will be flying around in corvette's, clippers, and anacondas. There will be little, if any middle class or small class ships. And honestly the way this game is currently designed, all ships seems to have been developed with strictly combat in mind, in my opinion. All ships are basically the same speed. Meaning if they are faster than another ship, it's not that much of a margin that it's a problem for pilots who have mastered the thrusters. Some small ships like the Eagle, for example, can't even escape some of the larger ships because the big ship can just boost away from it and spin around, destroy it with gimbals while it's struggling to catch up. Which I should bring this up while it's here... Small ships should have way more speed than they do now to balance out the weak guns and weak armor.

So my suggestion.. What if there was a way to fit your ship the way you want it to handle?

For example, if you have an eagle, but you don't feel it has enough firepower, you should be able to give it more firepower with the sacrifice of speed and maneuverability. (keep in mind the small ships are way too slow and too weak as it is, so I believe there should be a speed boost and gun boost in general as well.) This can work as long as the power plant is the limit of how much firepower you can get. So for example, if you want to give your eagle more firepower from its original factory state, you'd go over the power limit until you lower your thruster quality (the sacrifice of speed and maneuverability for firepower). This would change combat as a whole. You could fit your ship the way you want it, and people would be able to stick to the ship they want instead of having to follow the boring grinding stepping stone model.

If you want all speed and no weapons for smuggling, you would be able to do that as well. It could change every aspect of the game. Even exploration. Insane jump range for bad heat management.

The point is, to make sure even ships you use at the beginning of the game can be useful to avoid everyone wanting the big boom cannon.

Just a thought. What do you guys think?

Also please try to avoid cherry picking a small sentence you would like to argue against and try to address everything in this post, so that we can stay on topic and talk about the idea as a whole.

Might be worth waiting to see what crafting ends up being

It could be a way to tune/customize you ships performance more towards a target role

As someone said above, the descriptions of looting & crafting I've heard so far sound like we're going to get the level of customization we've all been waiting for. Indeed, that's the reason why we've had such a limited choice in *official* modules to date...to make customization a more relevant activity.

On outfitting they should add another slot called Co-pilot slots. Those co-pilots can be hired from stations and each of them come with their own mix of stats, and each stats improves something toward your ship, like increased jump range, ship maneuverability, ship damage, etc, no need to be too OP maybe just a very small amount of % improvement. They will need to be paid periodically or they will just leave you. These co-pilots grows as they fly with you and as their skills become greater, so does their salary.

This is something that I hope FDev would add.

For person that has no friends that play Elite Dangerous, Multicrews update will pretty much give me nothing.

Wait, didn't you post a thread the other day about how the Eagle should get a speed-buff? Isn't this basically another topic about getting your faster Eagle in the a different way? Anyway: Wait for 2.1, its been said by FD they'll allow further customization using crafting. However, too much customization and you might as well just have one ship: they need to be different enough to justify existing. Also, I really, reallty dont think you know enough about how the ships work to come to your conclusions, as others have explained in the other topic. By saying that all ships have basically the same speed and 'big ships can just gimbal and eagle on a run' you really demonstrate you haven't fully grasped it all yet. Not an insult, but I'm sure if you look back on these posts in a few months you'll be a little bit red-faced...

2.1 will bring crafting and that will allow you to customize your ship. The body work is a no go as it is not going to be worth it to FD to do it.

Yeah I did post something about wanting a speed buff for "my" eagle, because I'm the only one who owns an eagle in ED (sarcasm). This is just a more well thought out idea instead of it just getting instant gratification speed boost. Also with the whole too much customization thing you mentioned. If you would've read my post instead of rubbing your grubby little hands together to type out a confrontational, disrespectful, degrading post to make yourself feel big and important, you would have noticed I said that it would only work if the power plant limitations stayed at factory level for each ship. So if you customize too much on a certain ship, you'll either completely sacrifice something like armor, speed, etc etc... Or you will just completely skyrocket above the power plant limitation.

Also, ships are basically the same speed. There have been multiple times where I've sped away from an eagle in my python, cobra, and ASP (both pvp/pve) and just spun around and killed them with overwhelming firepower while they struggled to keep up. So I don't think you actually grasp it all yet. I'm making points based off of experience. I'm not sure where you're getting your info from. People seem to agree with me, so I doubt I'll be a bit red-faced a few months later.

Now, are we done attacking each other? This thread was meant to be a topic for discussion, not personal confrontations. I will not reply to you or acknowledge you if I see another post from you unless it's useful discussion about the topic that does not include me, unless you are telling me you are addressing my post. Nothing more.

Unless they sold interior and exterior alterations at the store.
OP I like the idea, it's what I'm hoping crafting brings to the table.
