Ships: Reward or Tool?

Simple question I would love to see people's answers to...

Do you view ships as a goal, or just as a tool to achieve your goals?

That's a good question, OP, but ...... it all depends:

There is no ultimate goal in Elite, but there are in-game goals to complete so, in my case:

To achieve a goal of say, unlocking an Engineer, I use the ship as a tool to suit the purpose .... Cobra or Courier for combat (even the Keelback when I want company), Clipper or AspX for missions (passenger or cargo or both);

But ships can be a goal .... had to grind to get the Clipper, so had to use combat ships to achieve it.

Even a Suicidewinder can be a tool to get you home from somewhere very far away very fast ! [noob]

Tool. But people think bigger=better=progression. If there was more stuff that needed smaller, cheaper ships it would help curb the rush to bigger ships e,g racing, smuggling etc

I see them as both.

They are a tool to perform jobs that you're interested in/like/are profitable, and they also constitute one of the potential rewards the game can offer you. They are shiny new toys and they also fly differently, so you can experience new ways of flying, fighting and fitting.

I think of them as rewards in and of themselves, as well as the means to garner even bigger rewards.

Intermediate Tools.

Man that would be a great name for a band.

God bless.
Unfortunately it's a "big ship world." Now don't get me wrong I like the big ships but it would be nice if I needed a small ship instead of just mixing up play time.
It's been said here a dozen times. Areas are needed, in-game, that are small pad only.

There are really two kinds of people in Elite.
People who are after "achievement" or generally some goal. That's hard in Elite. Really the only measurable achievement in Elite is wealth. For such people, the biggest, most expensive ship can be a reward.
Then there are people who are in for the ride. To get somewhere, look at pretty things, experience adventure,... For those, ships are tools.

Not sure i agree with that. The time i put into ED i COULD have every single ship in the game by now instead i put in all kinds of convoluted rules to attempt to slow me down (never sell a ship i do not own at least 1 varient of, never strip a ship down to generate cash for another, never use an exploit or what coukd be deemed as one )

And yet i AM a player who enjoys saving for the next ship.... If i was an achievement hunter however and the biggest ships were my goal i would have had it long ago

I just like playing spaceman.

Both. Ultimately, they're tools. But they serve a short-term reward purpose by giving new players an obvious immediate first objective.

To me they are tools. The best tool is an Asp.
I always test some fancy ships/builds in beta. After that, I never want them. They can't beat the Asp.

I which it was the Cobra that gave me this feeling. ;)

I should say, I absolutely saw the Imp Cutter as a goal, as I wasn't really aware of it's role in the game... and it was shiny, and I just had to own it. Oh the anguish I felt when I got one, only to be destroyed by a pirate FDL 10 minutes later [sad]
