Ships should have a "default" ship kit.

The way ship kits currently work is that they are entirely additive, obviously - that means you can add something to the ship's model, but you can't take anything away.

Suggestion: the next ship that FDev designs should have a "default" ship kit that the player cannot remove - it can only be replaced by a different ship kit. This would allow FDev to create ship kits that appear to remove parts of the ship. Here's what I mean:

Here's how ship kits currently work - the base model has wings, and the ship kits (shown in orange) can only add additional parts to the ship.

And here's what I'm suggesting - the base model doesn't really have wings. What it has is a default ship kit that a player cannot remove. Instead, when the player buys a ship kit, that kit replaces the default one. In this way, it would be possible to have ship kits that appear to remove portions of the ship. Basically, it would just give a little additional freedom to the kit designers.

Sounds good. Very unlikely that we'll still get this for the existing ships still. It would require reworking all of them. But it's an awesome idea for future ships.

No. From my observations, the base models of the ships look way better than the ship kit add ons.
I don't think the Eagle would look as good if the wings were removable.

maybe.. but going forward, all new concept/art direction ship and assets would nail this
and look awesome..

it's just more work is all.. but, maybe worth it with ship customization purchases on the store?

IMO the ship kits pretty much just suck. The micro transactions are poor all round, even half the painjobs look sloppy as do the name plates.

Most of the ships are good as they are without more external options, please let the devs work on some more needed stuff.

I wouldn't mind some more modular body pieces for ships, actually. Let us get a little more detailed and specific with our part swaps and really personalize our look. If we even approached the level of customizing of, say, a need for speed game, we'd get some REAL hype built up for custom ships.

0303 is right though; cool though this may be, I do hope they have higher priorities.

Hmm. Creating ship kits costs money. FD still creates then and puts them in the store. So I dare to conclude that ship kits are lucrative and make money for FD. And that's exactly the money which allows the devs to also work on other, much needed stuff.

As already said, reworking existing ships would be quite insane. A lot of effort, which probably would not pay off. But for future ships, it'd be awesome if the suggestion here would be used. Experience has shown that new ships by now always get their paint jobs and ship kits in the weeks after their release. But the ship kits currently often look tacked on. If ships and kits right from the start are designed as suggested in this thread, future ship kits can easily look more natural for the ships, while at the same time allowing bigger changes.

Ship kits are a small cash cow for Frontier, they're not going to make them free. Would be nice if you could MOD your ships to make them unique and give your ship that personal touch such as colour schemes, nose art, etc.

To whom are you responding? Who here said they should be free?

Sorry Sidereal6, looks like I misunderstood your original post with you saying a default ship kit, I thought that you meant that Frontier should issue this to everyone a standard, hence free.

looks like I misunderstood

No worries.

A practical example of what I'm suggesting would be like if the vertical fins on the AspX weren't part of the model. To a player who *doesn't* own a ship kit, that hypothetical AspX would look exactly the same as the AspX we currently have in the game - no change at all.

The only difference would be that if you bought a ship kit, one of the options could be change those fins out. Currently, the only option is to add new fins, or make them larger. Ship-kit designers don't have a "make it smaller" option.

While it sounds good in principle, one thing to bear in mind is that ship kits do not affect the hitboxes or the collision geometry of the ships in any way. This means that ship kits cannot remove important features such as wings that are likely to be hit in combat, it would reduce the actual ship of some of them to being a minimalist core while the rest of the ship cannot be hit. Small details being removable could work, such as bits of trim, winglets and small fins, but wings and larger fins are important enough to warrant an inclusion in the hitbox and therefore cannot be made into part of a kit.

There's also the argument that if things are to be removable as part of ship kits, a simpler solution would be for FD to simply make the basic ship that we purchase into a far more minimalist design that is missing trim and fins which would then be bulked out a bit with ship kits.
