If you're determined on going to Colonia, check out Ian Doncaster's posts.
It's not a trivial task. Using the stepping off stations can be vital for staging equipment and ships.
If you are going to Colonia, be aware that if you want 4A or better basic, power thrust, and jump modules, etc, you will need to bring them with you.
If you want grade 4A for almost all modules, or better, you will need to go back to the bubble to get it, once you get here. Shipping from the bubble might be worth it, depending on your playstyle. Especially engineered stuff.
Whirling Station in Ogmar has a surprising amount of stock, but no shipyard.
Best ports with shipyards, in Colonia:
TolaGarf's Junkyard, Kojeara. Lots of ships, lots of middling stock. Many factions, lots of missions
Robardin Rock, Carcosa. Lots of ships, lots of middling stock. Not as many factions or missions.
Colonia Hub, Colonia (Planetary, only three factions for missions, no restock as of this time). Lots of ships. Lots of stock. Need a fast ship to climb in and out. Don't carry limpets, as you will not be able to unload them to buy new ships.
Colonia Dream, Ratraii (no UC, only two factions for missions). It has the data trader. Lots of ships. Lots of stock. Good news is that the BGS wars have only two factions to work with...
Kojeara is the most centrally located of them, next to Colonia, and has lots of missions. It has a raw material trader, and is very convenient. It's an asteroid station, so watch it for internal obstacles. Robardin Rock is the same.
Most space stations only offer a limited number of ships, typically the Sidewinder and Hauler. Stock is also limited.
Planet ports offer a wider number of ships (Cobra's 3 & 4, T-6's, sometimes Vipers), but have limited stock.
Rodentia has fuel transfer limpets, and an OK planetary port, for example.
Once you get friendly with most of the factions, missions aren't hard to come by. There are a surprising number of delivery missions to be had. Once your rep has gone up, getting missions for G4/G5 mats isn't too hard.
Be aware that many of the destinations are outposts, or planet ports. Medium size ships, with lots of normal-space speed are *very* handy.
Landing on planet surfaces also favors medium or smaller ships. Remember- speed is life.
The best engineer is Mel Brandon, in Luchtaine, at The Brig. Not too hard to unlock, lots of nice blueprints. Note: Stocking up on pinned blueprints, and modules with experimental effects before leaving for Colonia can be a big help. Unlock the basic four engineers in the bubble first, of course...
The engineers at Asura and Tir are pretty easy as well. It's Igor, at Los, who's the problem...
It's a *lot* easier to keep track of things out here. A more basic playstyle can be had. Explorers should note that everything has been strip-mined long ago, so Colonia isn't quite the place to get First Discovered/Mapped tags locally. Head for the other side, if you want something new.
It's a growing small town. Welcome, stranger.
