Newcomer / Intro shooting at law enforcement

as I read it on the forum :
If you mount lasers on turrets and use smart ammunition specifically designed for multi-channel cannons, then your chances of hitting non-target ships will be minimized, as the turrets will stop firing if something gets in the way, and the smart ammunition will self-destruct to avoid hitting non-target ships. ships, this will reduce your theoretical maximum damage.
is it still relevant now?

Friendly fire is less of an issue since Fdev made NPCs less sensitive a while back (a year or more i guess).

The "smart rounds" experimental doesn't apply to lasers, only kinetic weapons like cannons and multicannons. But, yes when applied to kinetics it will avoid non-target fire and would work on turrets. But turrets are not widely used due to the lower damage output. Better to bung on some gimballed guns (which are still dead easy) and then you have less chance of friendly fire and can then use the engineering experimental for something more useful.

Turrets stop firing if there is non aggressive ship in the way already, it's just that with projectile weapons, it can't always guess correctly.

I love turrets on a decent sized slow ship, but would never do multi cannons. They run out of ammo too quickly.
If for some reason I did use MC turrets, I would engineer it with the regular and/or high cap

Apart from niche circumstances, turrets are a complete waste of space, and they're for losers. In most circumstances, you'd be better off with gimballed weapons that only fire when you pull the trigger.
