Shooting security ships/trade ships

Do you need to destroy ships such as traders and police to influence in a system or can you just shoot them and build up fines?

You have to destroy them. The BGS counts the number of murder bounties given out in a system. Fines have no effect in the BGS AFAIK.

To my knowledge, fines do have an effect as well. But certainly not as big as crimes. Additionally, if you kill a ship you get the full bounty plus the murder which also has an effect. So killing them has a much higher impact.

I'd argue given recent discussions in some other threads around here, the actual destruction of a ship has no impact on the BGS, and it's just the issuing of a fine/bounty.

If you just shoot them, one hit on the shields is enough, you will get a 100Cr Bounty (note that it's not a Fine) and commit one crime. If you then continue until you kill them you will get a further Bounty of 5k(?), gain notoriety and commit a second crime. For BGS purposes it's counting the number of crimes committed.

On that basis, even though you get two crimes if you destroy them, it can be quicker to just tag each target once for the initial Bounty and move on with no notoriety to deal with.

Assaults count to the BGS as Jane says, but be aware that any violent crime and fines from interdictions will count towards the ATR threshold. So pay attention when you mix it up because the next time you could have ATR saying hello.

Fines do not count towards negative security from my tests.
