A know quite a few CMDRs (including myself) fly under a roleplay name. Instead of a typical user handle, their CMDR name is a realistic-sounding full name. Mine right now is Alex Kincaid. Previously I flew as Balthazar Nyseth.
It'd be really cool if there was somewhere to add a short version of the name, and to have this used in place of the full name on mission boards. It could be entirely optional and doesn't even have to show up in character creation, so only people who want to use it need ever be bothered by it.
Though my CMDR name is "Alex Kincaid," and I'd like it to stay that way (appearing in full to other CMDRs and on exploration tags), I'd prefer it if engineers and mission-givers referred to me as "CMDR Kincaid." It just makes more sense.
Potentially there could be two: a short name AND a nickname. The nickname (for me, "Alex") would only be used by allied minor factions and G-5 Access Engineers. They claim in-game to be "always happy to see you."
