Shot a policeman... the adrenalin rush.

Just to swing this debate to a different tack I want to share tonight's experience - please read to the end.

I was killing pirates in a USS and swung in behind my prey, matched speed (ish) and unleashed from 200m away.

Suddenly old suicide sid the copper decides that 200m space would be a good area to fly... headdesk time and bounty ensue.

Finish the job and hit supercruise asap and start looking for a platform to go and pay, none in system - at this point I get adventurous.

I decide "I have the creds to cover insurance what the hell" and go to the station, switch off all none essential systems cruise up to the entrance and ask for permission.

Silent running about 3km out and keep a beady eye for the fuzz. As I get within 1km I'm getting hot (note for future silent mode later) so have to come back online. Then see the dreaded words "SHIP SCAN DETECTED".

I don't panic hit a bit more speed scrape my roof and make it into the station and land.

From 3km out I could feel my heart pounding and adrenaline surging, the yell of success brought my wife running - I'm not sure she fully understands - and it was possibly the tensest and most enjoyable thing I've done, knowing one slip this time wasn't "pay a fine" but "get blown to bits".

My view on bounties has changed completely with that one experience - I still think they are harsh, with the UI being stupid, but for Gods sake PLEASE don't take them away!

great story.. done the same myself. Outposts are a lot safer of course. No patrol ships.

A tip is to arrive behind the station (you can arrange that by having the station in front of the planet as you exit) then boost real close to the structure and follow it around, hugging it. This minimises your chance of being scanned. As you turn the corner, run for the entrance as fast as possible.

You actually don't need to go silent. I often run in stolen goods and slaves by simply lining up with the letterbox about 8 to 9 Km out, go full speed, request permission at around 7.5 Km and hit the afterburners at about 5 Km. Just go full reverse once you're in the opening and you'll be fine and you'll find you get in before anyone gets a scan off.

This is easier in faster ships like the Viper but I've also done it in my Adder as well. The station police are pretty slow really they usually only try to scan within 2 or 3 Kms of the station so as long as you're going full belt you'll be fine.

I do this also. 100+ all the way in will beat the scan. I guess FD will nerf it soon. The only downside is just after the point of no return when you see a big ship coming out

...and the ultimate little hose on the fevered excitement of the OP, is that it was all not necessary. Since 1.07 there is a little bug... All you need do when grazing a friendly policeman, is to SC out of the area, slow down, exit SC, then save and exit to menu. After that, resume and get back in. Your wanted status is gone, no fine to pay, no bounty.

Besides, you can't actually right now pay any fines or bounties on your head due to same bug. When they fix the bug, you may however get a nasty surprise, so be paranoid. Check at all times if you got a price on your head, and if you do, and don't like it, pay it off.

Harsh? Wait until a cop pulls you over seven times in a row and you blow them away in cold blood instead of putting up with it anymore. I left some poor family father/motherless back near Brani and I don't regret it. That scumsucker had it coming. I'm not going to pay the bounty, either.

Now that I've experienced Elite, and adapted to its harsh penalties, I find the game exciting during those moments. The penalties are pretty harsh, and I think they should be scaled back a bit, but overall system seems good. Elite is the first game in a looooong time that makes death meaningful for me. But it could be toned down a touch.

Glad you enjoyed yourself, Firebeard :D
