So here's the deal.

I have a very good memory. Some would argue photographic from the detail I can recall events from the past.

However, there is a caveat.

I cannot for the love of all that is great, remember lyrics to songs I like.

I've noticed this a lot lately, as I've been playing Assassin's Creed Black Flag. Can't remember the sea shanties. Not one of them.

The same is true for any other song, regardless of if I like it or not, its fame, or any other quality for that matter.

I cannot remember lyrics at all. Even if I listen to one song dozens of times in a row, which I do quite often.

I'm actually considering bringing it up with my GP next time I see them. There's so many things wrong with my head that I wouldn't be surprised if this is linked.

Thoughts guys?

Talk to a doctor if you find it a problem. I'm pretty sure that everyone's brain works differently so it could well just be the way that you're wired. Still it's best to talk to someone qualified if you're unsure.

To be honest, knowing that your brain works in a particular way is the first step to dealing with any issues that it throws up.

EDIT: I was diagnosed with clinical depression in the mid 00s but had been fighting it all my life without knowing what was going on inside my head. Professional help (diagnosis, medication and learning to manage it) definitely saved my bacon! [up]

Indeed. I just find it odd how I can remember meaningless conversations I had a decade & a half ago, by the letter... But can't remember song lyrics I heard yesterday.

Luckily, brain questions are precisely why I see the doctor. Psychosis, voices, Asperger's, Bi-polar... Got it all.

Yes, I concur, talk to a Doctor.

If it is any consolation I have a very similar thing going on, I can program proficiently in seven different languages and sort of in another five yet I cannot remember song lyrics until I hear them playing.

The conclusion I came to was that all the code syntax and design patterns forced everything else out ;-)

But, that said, see a Doctor - even if you just get reassurance. Good luck with it o7

And you see that's just it! I'm actually teaching myself Python on a Raspberry Pi and, lo-&-behold, I'm remembering the language. Slowly, but I have written very basic programmes entirely from memory.

The songs are the only thing I can't remember. It's really weird.

I am not a doctor but it sounds to me like your cognitive functions are ok if you can learn a new language and recall it in a useful manner.

Again I am not a doctor!

Finger in the air guess it sounds like this might just be a side-affect of the other stuff. Personally I find it really difficult to link names & faces, but I manage to remember useless nonsense from decades ago at the same time. :)

I'm a bit "on the spectrum" myself, apparently, enough so to make interpersonal stuff difficult but not enough to cause too many other problems. I can't read people that I don't know... Annoying but a management issue, I suppose.

Anyway, good luck sir! [big grin]

Thanks dude. It probably is just a side-effect of the other stuff.

Can't be blamed for inquiring though.

Absolutely not, but this isn't really the place to ask if you want a sensible answer!

For me, I know that weird stuff goes on in my head so I just go with the flow...

Go speak to yer doc...lapses in memory have many causes, some easy to do something about and others not so much. I only know what day it is because my daughter writes it down on a calender along with all the little 'reminders' fer me to remind me I have issues with short term memory. Reasons.

Long term memory is something I personally dont have issues with, which is why I would ask if its short term general forgetfulness or longer term?

Also...song lyrics and the ability to recall them years later is a natureally perishable skill. Brain is like any other muscle in that if ye dont use specific parts to keep the memory fresh, then yer gonna forget little things like that over time anyway. And the more ye stress out over it, the harder it is to recall as stress levels also affect recollection abilities.

So may not be anything to worry about...but as ever, if in doubt, go see the doc ^
