Should I buy a DK2?

So, I'm very green on this whole VR subject and have been trying to educate myself. I would love to get on the VR train, but there is no way I can afford the hardware to run a CV1, let alone the CV1 itself, so have pondered the possibility in getting a second hand (eBay) DK2, so any advise from you lovely lot would be greatly appreciated!

My PC specs are...

Win10 (latest patched) - 64bit
i5-3570k - 3.4GHz
Asus GTX970
16gb Ram
OS drive is SSD
ED running on secondary SSD

I'm fairly confident that the above should be fine, assuming I turn down the settings in ED:H (currently I run on Max/Ultra at 1080p 60Hz) - what I am confused about is the Oculus software, does the latest version support DK2, are there any delightful issues to get around?

and... what's the issue with USB3 - the software I ran from the Oculus said mine wern't compliant - is this applicable to the DK2?

Any help gratefully received (please)

Thanks guys :)

Your specs are good and no concern there with a DK2, as you can even power a CV1 with that configuration. I own a CV1 and right now with a little tweaking here and there i am satisfied with what i have. However when i first got it, i was not. And thinking of an even reduced resolution, that the DK2 has, would make me back off, but that is totally a personal opinion. If you havent tried VR, i strongly recommend trying it somewhere first to get an impression of what the actual tech can do, before falling back to an old one.

One thing i can tell you for sure... the scale, the extra awareness and the feeling of depth is beyond awesome and i will never ever play Elite without a HMD anymore. Get your hands on VR, know how to get the best out of it and you are done with monitors for gaming... believe me.

The DK2 is unsupported - and Facebook can turn it off anytime.

However, if Elite is the only game you want to play in VR, and you can get one cheap, I'd suggest picking up a DK2 for a reasonable price. VR makes no sense until you've tried it - and then you can giggle at everyone saying it's just like 3D TV ;)

Oh... and if getting a DK2 is your only option... then get it, try it and in the worst case resell it. There is no mistake in that.

Thanks for the replies, all good advice.

I'll continue to scout about for a DK2 going cheap. Still unsure on the compatible software issues, does anyone know if this thread is still valid?

:)

I would like to know if the DK2 is even going to work now!!!! it did in Xmas 2015!

at present, it could be going in the bin!

cannot get my DK2 working at present with ED, and only want it for that!

I would be extremely cautious about any second hand/used DK2 which could be worthless.....(and unsupported!)

I'll let you know if successful, already spent 24 hours on it!

I'm using DK2 and a 970 with Oculus 1.3 with no problems, using debug tool is essential as it makes the picture a lot sharper.

Cant afford the CV1 - get the DK2 guarantee you will be blown away....

We don't play Elite in VR, we live it
