Should I Buy ED?

Hi, First, I'm a Backer of Star Citizen,

*Waits for shouting to die down*

I'm president of my uni's RP club, so as you can imagine, we have lots of gamers (my executive team has an ED backer and 2 SC backers beside me),

I'm really interested in getting into ED but I am struggling to find anyone who can give reasoned argument for me to.

The problem:
Every time I ask for a comparison (as I would of - and probably did between wing commander and x-wing/tie fighter back in the day) it turns into a flame war with P2W and geometric box/silly unrealistic ships arguments thrown by both sides amongst a whole host of bile and spite.

ED intrigues me, but what makes it different enough for me to buy it?

and just for context, I backed SC when a friend of mine introduced me to it 18 months ago, I only found out about ED from the SC forums.

It all depends on what type of game you are looking for?
ED is not a shoot em up, it's not fast paced though it does have it's moments, ED is a space simulator, or as near to one you can get with today's knowledge.
I think it all depends on your mindset and what your expecting from a game, ED is unique and is loved by many but not by all.

I'd just say, it's really quite simple, if you love sci-fi games and the idea of piloting your own ship around a real emulation of the galaxy, get it. As you know, it's in its early stages full release wise but it's only going to get better as time passes. If you like space, it would be crazy to miss out on this experience.

Yeah I'm after something a little laid back, I'm not a power gamer, I as a rule prefer turn-based strategy and RPG's, and I am horrendous at twitch-reaction gaming. I'm after something to tool around in, have a bit of fun, and not get shiv'ed by 12 year olds with adhd and too little parenting (yes I still have some COD resentment left over)

Go for it!
You seem to have the right attitude and expectations, you'll love it!

"I am horrendous at twitch-reaction gaming."

You wont enjoy the combat asp[ect . Its specifically designed to be twitch. Thats why Elite exists in the first place. You could I suppose disappear off exploring but dont complain when u are fragged by someone in a sidewinder with one pulse laser.

Hello you backed SC? Thats totlaly just about twitch pvp all the time. Dont see much reasoning there.

and yes, arena commander is twich pvp, its why i don't play it much, and have mostly been honing my skills (what little i have) in vanduul swarm, once i'm in the PU i'm part of an org and hopefully gonna be more tank and medic than frontline dogfighter

From what you say, you'll enjoy ED. If you don't want to get fragged by players you can always play solo or in PVE groups, and if you wish to avoid fighting and are looking for a more laid back experience, you'll love trading and exploring. Eventually you'll have enough money to buy a powerful ship with turreted weapons that aim and shoot automatically, and good defense, so you'll be able to fight back anything without having to be an ace pilot.

That sounds pretty much what i'm after, but i heard there was no offline/single player mode?

as i see it, in simple terms ED == ARMA (simulator) SC = CoD (run, shoot, die, respawn simulator) :D

and i get that you guys don't like SC but please stop mistaking Arena Commander for Star Citizen (purposely or otherwise), its a whole lot more than AC and you guys should know that by now.

I am not a twitch gamer myself. My kids would tell you how bad I am! I also suffer from hand pain which is particular a problem on a console. However ED is slower paced than an FPS, so tactics and understanding what your ship is capable of become more important. If you dont want combat you can mostly avoid it. Currently in ED you are the ship, so its all about flying, albeit most of it can be done at a pace you want to go at.

ED is based on the Milky Way so the game area is huge. For me that is an experience in itself, to be able to fly to Mars, the Moon or locate Voyager 1, trade, bounty hunt etc. I dont think any other game gives you both a "real" scale arena with combat/trade.

If you are interested in playing with others in your group then ED is currently limited from a multiplayer perspective.

Its definitely not the finished article and as others have said most definitely not everyone's choice. It is a game which I think should be at least played for an hour to experience the sound and the wow effect of docking.

I would get your ED backer to demo it to you. If you have an Oculus Rift I would say buy it yesterday.

If you want a huge space sand-box for immersion and atmosphere, I recommend it 100%. It's at a very early stage, but it's already very impressive.

There is no offline mode, you always need an internet connexion. However, you can play "solo online", which means the missions and economy are still generated by the server and influenced by all players, BUT you'll never meet another player in space, essentially you'll always be playing in your own private instance all the time. You can also choose to play in private groups, which means only players within this group will appear in your game, so if you want it can be you + your friends and no one else. Yet another possibility is joining a PVE group like MOBIUS, which has several hundred members you'll meet, but those who play there don't engage in PVP at all.

If you never have played an Elite game before i'd suggest having a look at Oolite (free) or if you fancy the difficulty in setting it up, FFED3D with the AndyJ mod (links are in my sig).

If you find you like either of those options, then yes ED is worth getting. Keep in mind it is not really an MMO (currently) and plays more like a single player space game, even in Open mode. It does require a constant internet connection unlike Oolite or FFED3D, for either Solo or Open play modes.

Also keep in mind we currently have a bare bones feature set and expect to see many improvements as time and patches/updates come.

Hi, First, I'm a Backer of Star Citizen,
*Waits for shouting to die down*

you wont get that here.
nothing wrong with a bit of competition.

but comparisons , I think it can only be compared to the original Elite.
and what you should know the game isn't finished by far.

it has a maximum of 32 players in one instance but I never saw more than 17.
and I know that is an exceptional large amount.

I think the best thing you can do is read trough the SC tread.
but as you guys still have to wait at least for a year , my choice would already have been made.
think that's the best argument anyone can give.
besides from that its much less costly in the end.

I backed both ED and SC and I say - go get it.

You have no idea how wrong you are about the SC = CoD part :) Arena Commander plays like this sure, but its not a full SC by any means.

I love everything Elite, but for the moment I have put ED to one side.

I think its needs work and more content.

I think it will be a great game and a definite purchase given some time.

I never played Wing commander and I dont like the look of SC so I can't comment on those.
