Should I Buy ED?

mordin: there is a good probability of that happening, as SC seems to be getting more exposure, it will drag in more of the mongs... the same reason i dont play dayZ much anymore, everybody has a kill on sight policy. its rare to find any decent players on there any more, such as people who will help new spawns, or watch what their targets are doing and assessing them as threats before killing them. everybody just goes round shooting anything that bloody moves and alas i fear that SC will go the same way aswell. Which is one reason i'm glad ED isn't on steam, hopefully it will cut down on those types of players

right i have actually bought ED, trying to play with a thrustmaster T16000m, this feels horrible, am i doing something wrong?

The problem is you are trying to play it like a space sim. Play it like a WWII flight sim and it might start to feel better. maybe.

So tell me how you feel about ED launch trailer?

Hi, First, I'm a Backer of Star Citizen,

*Waits for shouting to die down*

I'm president of my uni's RP club, so as you can imagine, we have lots of gamers (my executive team has an ED backer and 2 SC backers beside me),

I'm really interested in getting into ED but I am struggling to find anyone who can give reasoned argument for me to.

The problem:
Every time I ask for a comparison (as I would of - and probably did between wing commander and x-wing/tie fighter back in the day) it turns into a flame war with P2W and geometric box/silly unrealistic ships arguments thrown by both sides amongst a whole host of bile and spite.

ED intrigues me, but what makes it different enough for me to buy it?

and just for context, I backed SC when a friend of mine introduced me to it 18 months ago, I only found out about ED from the SC forums.

I found Star Citizen and backed that first. But on watching Youtube posts of people playing it, I came across ED. I just missed out on the Gamma and Beta so joined at launch in December and have been enjoying that game so far - my reasoning for buying both around the same time was really based on the fact that Star Citizen is really playable as a game until Squadron 42 drops later in the year other than have an odd shoot up in Arena Commander so in the mean time I will give ED a good outing.

My initial thoughts on the game are:

1 - Immersion is great really, especially if you find people to play with and 'a place to call home' in the big universe, this allows some player driven story elements to evolve and gives the game a bit more purpose - however, if you read around the forums some people find that the creative scope of what has been created so far is limited and if you play more than a few hours a week the repetitive nature of the content does get to 'some' people. More optimistic minded people will just wait and accept as is until the new patch content

2 - Scale - the galaxy size is a bit boggling to the mind, I've visited 300 or so systems and it feels like I've not even left the area I started in! Its worth playing just to appreciate the galaxy - I've found combat is more interesting than detail scanning of planets, but that's my play style

3 - Longevity - As above, it's a weird combination of both being slightly repetitive in nature (in terms of the feel and style of missions / gameplay) but at the same time every time you log in I am having different experiences due to the scale and freedom of the game. Therefore the conclusion I make is that as the content increases, it can only be a good sign that this game will be a keeper.

4 - Graphics / Sound - Great, love the sound design - ships are old school - which I like, but not as personal as the SC ones. The planets can look a bit flat for a next gen game really, and the overall feel is that the engine itself won't really compete for graphics with the latest updates on the CryEngine for SC - by the time the game is at Beta.

5 - Combat - SC is more like the feel you had in X-Wing vs. Tie Fighter from what I've seen in Arena Commander for those wanting the old school feel, but I have enjoyed the combat vs. Elite AI or humans. You can in the smaller ships take on the bigger ships with clever use of shields / evasion and weapon choice, so it's not always the bigger ships that win out. To counter that, I would say that shield cell banks feel a bit of a cheat!

6 - If they are both out - which one would I play?

I only really have time after work to get into one game, so I imagine I am going to get a good year into this game, and then on the release of SC I will switch - if only for a new experience - after they are both in full swing who knows! Will have to quit my job!

Hope that helps!

Oh - Bugs - I have only experienced a couple, loss of credits due to the bounty not being picked up at the stations - and the January 1st crash where I lost some weapons purchased which will get fixed for my account at some point! But neither have really stopped me enjoying the game really - and I guess for others they have been affected to the point where they couldn't play which is unfortunate. I would give it a go and come along for the ride!

They will introduce some mechanics that will make death in PU more harsh than it is in AC. Way more. I cant link the exact sentence but it wont be shoot em, die and repeat- at least that is not in Roberts vision of this sim. I hope.
Also from what I read If they implement 10% of what is planned - SC will be too complex/demanding for average "console" gamer. Those are of course just my personal views on the subject.

right i have actually bought ED, trying to play with a thrustmaster T16000m, this feels horrible, am i doing something wrong?

I use a t16000m as well and am a backer of both ED and SC too. I think ED plays great on the joystick (I use a left hand gamepad like a Nostromo or Tartarus with the joystick). I don't use the TARGET software to tweak anything, just have the yaw and pitch deadzones at about 1/6 and the roll deadzone at about 1/4 in the game options. Also make sure you are using the yaw axis, roll axis and pitch axis, with nothing set in yaw left, yaw right, roll left, etc.

Part of what you may be feeling is where you are coming from SC. When people say SC is "twitchier" they aren't saying it is only fighting (well currently it is, but that's not the end game). SC is faster-paced than ED with the flight model. Ships turn, spin and maneuver at a higher rate. ED is more about maneuvering behind your opponent and thinking about flight paths. For this reason, there is a much longer time-to-kill than in SC with its 2 second deaths. Also, yaw isn't a major flight component, it is probably half, if not less, than the yaw speed of SC. The twist on the t16000m I mainly use for minor corrections to aiming and minor course corrections. Also I will twist in conjunction with the strafing thrusters to kind of "slide" the ship around when lining up for docking and things of that nature. ED is more about pitch and roll. If you need to make a hard left turn, don't use yaw. Push your stick left and roll 90 degrees (so your wings are up and down from the previous sideways orientation), then pull the stick back to pitch up into the turn. Or you can roll right and pitch down.

Also when turning make sure the throttle speed is in the blue zone - it makes a huge difference. I have an X52 HOTAS and the yaw is bound to the twist on the stick which means its easy to add the yaw in to the pitch and roll.

BTW congrats on your decision to purchase I hope you enjoy it as much as I am

realism is the reason ED gets my vote so far... i like games that try to be as real as possible, which is why i said ED == arma 3... i want things to act like they should do, eg: space to be as large as it should, and fly like it should within reasonably possible, if i wanted my spaceship to fly like a plane, i would play something like iL2-sturmovich, its little things like that that are putting me off SC. i've been playing Elite since the BBC micro and acorn days, at the time i owned a C-64 so used to play it on my friends acorn electron, and when i couldn't play i would listen in on my radio as my friend only lived two houses away and his acorn leaked so much RF that i could actually tune into it. he always used to blame me for making his acorn crash :D

Unfortunately and this is my only big downside of Elite - Elite ships behaves more like a planes than SC ones - in Elite you have roll and turn mechanics, and SC ones are more "newtonian". But both can be entertaining and I like variety. :)

I love everything Elite, but for the moment I have put ED to one side.

I think its needs work and more content.

I think it will be a great game and a definite purchase given some time.

I never played Wing commander and I dont like the look of SC so I can't comment on those.

yep wait until everyone are in anaconda and Elite and youll be bitchin about in ur sidey7

If you like Space Games you will like Elite. I've backed both SC and Elite and I am getting way more fun out of Elite and I've spent considerably less on it too (PB backer). I'm enjoying the combat quite a bit, it feels really good, flys really well and the ships do exactly what you tell them to do, a lot of potential.

The only thing that I really hate about Elite is the size of the systems, travel time and the monotone feeling of space. I think in honesty FD went far too realistic and to me that is very boring, because lets face it real space is boring (for some like me). I think they should of gone more of the No Man's Sky type of deal when it came to system sizes/use of space dust etc. but that's just me.

Despite those shortcoming and lack of proper grouping/flying with friends etc. mechanics (which are coming early 2015) I am still having a blast.

Back to the original question - I say absolutely go and buy Elite.
It's not like we have 10 space sims coming out every month. Elite is out, and it's in playable state, it works smooth and it's very enjoyable. We will have to wait long time before first version of PU so its perfect for you to try Elite for now.
