Should I buy this?

60 fps as a baseline? Seriously?
I heard the human eye can't destinguish between 40 fps and 60 fps so 40 should be easily doable. I'd stick my neck out and say even 30 fps is sufficient for a good gaming experience.

Indeed, many xbox and xbox one games drop to 30 frames per second on some games and thats considered to be ok.

60fps is usually where most low end HD monitors cap out so using vysnc I don't see higher but prefer not to endure tearing and blurring at lower.

Honestly you can build a PC that will play this game perfectly at 1080p res for peanuts. I built one 3 years ago using a non K 2500, the cheapest MSI mobo I could get (£28 H67 Express), 8gb of corsair xms, a cheap OCZ Agility ssd, a windforce gtx560 (50% of the entire outlay) and a FSP Aurum Series 500 gold standard psu for £320 all-in. Its completely silent and plays everything at medium/high detail @ 1080p on a cheap 20" Samsung I picked up for £90 at the same time. I tossed the lot in an old Lian Li I had lying around.

You could probably do quite a bit better than that now for the same or less money ..

There isn't really a need to be lumbered with an unsuitable laptop for gaming unless you're strapped for cash or there's other considerations specific to your needs etc. I mean a really good mid range spec gaming PC costs about the same as a PS4 ..

No, not strapped for cash at all but can't really justify investing in a gaming PC for one game and if I did it would mean being holed up in the spare room which defeats the object of being able to relax alongside the wife unfortunately.

The largest difference between PC and laptop are graphic cards. PC version of the graphic card is not the same as laptop version of the graphic card with the same numbering, i.e. GTX660M is not equal to GTX660, not even close!

NVidia GT-series cards are mostly not suited for games.

You start to notice it on quick panning. That is one reason high framerate cinema is so different. I play World of Tanks semi-competetively, and I do feel hampered by my 40+ FPS.

Maybe there is another way of looking at this. Will you look back in future years and feel you missed out?

I bought a new rig for this game because it was a game I didn't want to miss and wanted to enjoy. I saw this as a chance to relive the magic of my twenties, in my fifties in glorious technicolour.

Mmmmmultipost!

You're an ex UT player :D

It has an i7-3610QM quad core processor with 16GB of RAM and a GeForce GT650m GPU.

I would play with the laptop plugged into a 42" plasma via HDMI and with a 360 controller. Would this mean the resolution would not need to go beyond 1080 resolution and thus helping frame rate?

Your processor is fine, as is the memory.

The video card however is on the low end. (LINK with a score of 1296 ) From the Alpha support forum there is a thread (if you can see it) by Michael that lists the minimum is a GTX285 with a score of 1263.

Like my docking, it's going to be close :D

Hi guys/gals

Sorry to resurrect my old thread which originally asked advice on whether my laptop would run it ok. I'm pretty confident it will and I'd be playing it through my 42" plasma and most likely with a wireless 360 controller.

Anyhow having perused the forums for the last couple of weeks I'm still on the fence. There's lots of posts regarding lack of content but TBH that doesn't concern me massively as I'm sure I'd get most of the fun from learning how it all works and just the general experience of the game itself.

I'm mainly a console gamer but am struggling to find games to keep my attention and kinda feel I'm just looking for something to relax me for a couple of hours or so after a long day at work.

Please help me make my mind up! I won't blame anyone if I go ahead and end up hating it lol.

Just looking for general opinions based on my laptop spec again and what I'm wanting from the game.

Thanks in advance

Hi.

I've recently discovered and took interest in this game. I'm of an age where I remember playing the first game in the mid 80's and loved it.

I could do with opinions on whether my current acer aspire V3-771g would run the game.

It has an i7-3610QM quad core processor with 16GB of RAM and a GeForce GT650m GPU.

I usually game on my xbox one from the comfort of the sofa, which suits my home setup so wouldn't be bothered to make any major investment in a proper gaming rig or other peripherals.

Just looking for opinions really from people with more experience with PC gaming.

Thanks in advance

I'm also an 80s player, used to play on my speccy.

I think your computer would run it fine, not sure about using a mouse pad though. So maybe, at least, a USB mouse.

If you liked the 80s version, you'll love this.

Running the game on an I7 @ 2.4Ghz with a GT650M
Game runs great most of the time, bit of stutter every once in a while when supercruizing close to planets, other then that no problems what so ever

I've customised my graphics settings somewhere around the mid level

Theres someone with about the same setup,

I'm a console player, I play this game using a console controller, I definitely recommend it. Its very easy to get lost in the game and spend many hours just pottering about.

Thanks for that

Specs should be fine. I was worried, too, with an I5@2.8 and a GT545 but turns out, with mid-level settings at full resolution, it's all cool.
I do recommend a joystick, though. But then again, I am absolutely no console player - I can imagine this working nicely with dual controller sticks.
While I'd agree with the sentiment I've read somewhere that ED is a vast ocean that's only a few inches deep, it is so damn pleasurable to wade about in the water :)

Before my new compy upgrade, I was running Elite: Dangerous Premium Beta at 1920x1080 at High detail with a GForce 680, and reliably got 60 frames, dipping down to 30 occasionally in heavy combat or traffic - also I was recording the whole time. It was very playable, and you can tune the graphics more. The latest release uses some more heavy graphics features, but it will still look really good and play pretty smooth.

Well I finally went ahead and purchased the game and after the first few hours all I can say is WOW, Frontier have created a work of art!!

My laptop plays it fine on medium settings at a fairly steady 35-40 FPS even in busy scenes which is ok. Not sure what I could change to increase a little without losing much visually - any tips?

I've spent a good deal of time setting up the Xbox One pad with great results. I don't need the keyboard at all. I'm definitely going to get voice attack but am waiting for an external sound card to be delivered tomorrow to check my Astro A40's will work (I have no optical out on the laptop for the MixAmp) then I'll need to get a long lead for the mic.

I feel I'm already quite good at dogfighting and can dock easily under a minute once in the station which is a relief as was worried about that. Dead easy!

I'm obviously doing some delivery runs to start out. Only problem I've found is that the system I need to get to can be seen when zoomed out on Galaxy Map but is no where to be found when zooming in - is this a bug perhaps?

So yes, overall very pleased and enjoying it immensely. I just hope I can find enough time to spend playing once back at work next week.

BTW - Happy New a Year!!

Ps - maybe this should be in the Newcomers Forum, mods?
