Should I do online mode? I am a bit nervous to...

I've started playing in Open a few days ago. Didn't see a soul for ages, but now I popped back to Alliance area, I see some people. Last night I popped into the local 'roids at Zoance, and a Clipper was there for a while. Usually, the only ones I see are NPC pirates so it was a suprise to see a Clean one! :D Unfortunately, he got a 200Cr bounty and had to run for his life after a few minutes. :(

As others have said stay away from cg or rare routes and you should be ok...

...Just stay away from major trade/rares hubs (esp George Lucas - known for its griefers) and avoid conflict zones...

...A lot of issues come from noobs hanging around in the places thst they have heard of (like Lave)...

...Just avoid, rare goods systems and core systems(near sol, anachar, laedin, and eranin) and you'll barely ever see any other players...

...I'd suggest going online away from the Lave cluster, busy CGs or popular rares routes. Certainly do NOT go online for the first time at George Lucas station :)..

Interesting that the problems exist mostly around these spots. I don't know about the OP, but for me, my trading mode exists through these systems as when I trade, I'm a rare goods merchant. Also, in Solo/PG, this Lavian zone has been my home, so for me this poses an interesting question.

If going into Open means avoiding these places, migrating to areas where you rarely see other players, then what's the point? Why not remain Solo/PG? I think if I'm going to switch to playing long-term in Open, then I will have to find a way to get comfortable with these hotspots.

Well, at least now you can do so with your eyes open- it won't feel like you're a lamb to the slaughter.

Go for it! I'm not normally much of an online player, but I enjoy seeing other players in ED.

The only time I got shot at and killed by another player was when I reset my save and left the starter system for the first time. Someone in a Vulture thought it'd be rather fun to blast my little Sidewinder to bits for no reason.

However, aside from that small incident, I rarely encounter people. Maybe I'm just not in the right systems. I'm usually buzzing around Sol and the other systems close to our solar system. Occasionally I branch out and go for an explore, but I usually head back to Sol after a week or so. I can play for hours and see only one or two people, usually when docking. I've had no chat interaction of any kind aside from when I was in beta in the early days.

You're welcome to add me if you want. CMDR Pete Uplink

i think this is more like advices for new players, when you got some more experience and know what to watch out for then there is no problem playing in these areas at all.
learn what player icons look like on the radar, watch out for suspected interdictions and take precaution.
another danger has been when docking, but same goes for that, keep an eye out for players whit deployed hardpoints and take precaution.
however one thing has been hard to defend against and that has been rammers, but i think that will improve whit the 1.3 patch.

I spent a lot of time around the Lave area in open and rarely had any trouble. I think I've been attacked three times in the last few months by a human player but I ran once and won the other two fights. But the majority of CMDR's I've met are just enjoying the game. I've winged up several times with people I've just met and had a great time.

Open is much more fun. It adds a sense of risk but you will enjoy yourself more. Once you have enough to cover your insurance who cares about the risk anyway. The worst than happens is you need to rebuy.

sorry but the whole concept is borked, there is no point in playing open whatsoever.

SOLO should be offline and with stripped out multiplayer events logically. No way to take the credits to open and vice versa.

OPEN should be a real MMO with real player interaction.

The way it's now is a Frankengame.

WHY should I ever go trading in OPEN? For the risk to get PvPed while running rares? mua ha ha. No way.

Well, I landed at the infamous George Lucas, my old stomping ground in Solo/Group. Soon the other humans will learn to fear my Cobra! :D
