Should I pre-order?

I am very tempted, but I am scared of pre-orders. I know a lot of people got burned by pre-ordering X Rebirth, which was a horrible mess at launch. I really like X3 though, and I would like to relive that experience. But I can only start playing the game when I go back home in February.

So, if I pre-order, I pay 10 eur less, right? Also, I get some nice pre order bonuses?

But what about the content? I really like to relax in space... Mining is enjoyable for me, but also business activities, like building space stations. Is this possible in this game?

And how would you rate this game? Is it a 8? A 5? A 1? Or a perfect 10 maybe?

I might ask more, but these are the main points I'm thinking about right now. What do you guys think?

Im pretty sure you can mine and definitely trade business style
As far as im aware player owned stations are a planned feature but not in the game as yet.

I am however not an expert.
(Does seem a bit of a shame to me if you cant have your own little hideout somewhere)

I do not think you will save any money be pre-ordering but there are virtual items you get included with pre-order.

As for the game itself, there is enough to do although building you own station is unlikely to be an option.

There are still a lot of features to be added and they will be added in the years to come.
The game is far from finished but it is playable and not that buggy.

Most of the time I try to steer people away from the game because I think it won't appeal to those who don't already know. Its greatly unfinished but to be honest, with what you are describing. You'll probably love it. Its a very pretty space grind revolving around mostly trading and mining with occasional NPC contact that you can almost always evade or escape from.

I've not seen anything concrete regarding player bases. The closest thing I have seen so far was the idea from Frontier about self creating bases - a device you can possibly purchase, place on an asteroid and it would hollow out its contents. Then expand into it to make a small base. Whether or not this can be player owned was not mentioned. But this would be useful for explorers as a base camp to store supplies in etc...

You cant build your own space stations. You can however mine, but it is very tedious work (if you ask me).

We're so close to release right now (December 16th), so if I were you, I'd definately wait and see what release brings. You'll probably be able to read some reviews too that could make you help decide.

Of course, if you pre-order the game for the discount, you don't have to play straight away. You can wait until they add more of the feature functionality and join in later. There's no race or rush after day 1.

I can only start playing in February, when I get back home to my Desktop PC.

I would say Get it.

It won't have station building in it, as a previous fan of x games and an old eve player, I would have thought it would be something I'd miss, but after nearly 100 hours played, it hasn't had time to cross my mind. It's not an x game, it's it's own thing. I love it.

As a caveat to that, it's most defiantly a game you can play at your own pace.

Hmm, also I'm thinking I would like to be a pirate hunter, since so many people just love to start stealing things from people in various games. I would love to hunt them down. How good is this style of gameplay?

Thanks for the replies so far. Keep them coming :)

yeah that would work for me :D

My general advice is to wait at least until a few weeks after release, and best of all give things a month or three on the market even though it gets a hint more expensive.

Right now the game is IMO very bare-bones. If you like "relaxing" tasks like mining or space trucking, you'll get a bunch of fun out of it, but that's really the bulk of game; combat is, IMO again, rarely really fun with lots of very easy encounters punctuated by opponents that just chop you apart, but little middle ground (my experience ends at a souped-up Eagle, so YMMV). There's also little variation to be seen, stations are all very similar, and there's only so much variation in all the Big Round Things in space. Taking a mission and ending up in a system where you have to travel 360,000 ls or more to the destination (upwards of 10–15 minutes walltime staring at the screen) for a measly 2k credits is also something that will happen. To some people, including me to a degree, that can be cathartic, others will just find it annoying.

It will be interesting to see how the "story" pans out and how wings will function (only at that point will the advertised multiplayer aspects really become viable hopefully "early next year"), so if that's stuff you expect, really, wait for it.

the game isn't a mess. it's nice. it's really nice if you know what it is beforehand.

it's elite from 1980something with a lot better graphics.

it's a trader game

it's a combat game

it's an exploration game

it's a mining game, but that's less of a feature compared to the other three, really, and mining is just a preface to trading.

it has multiplayer capabilities, but don't expect to see battles where people lose $1000USD and hundreds of ships blow up like in eve

If you pre order you save a fiver and get the combat training demo. The training will allow you to sort out your controls and get used to flying and fighting before launch, which does take some time, allowing you to get into the game quicker and have a bit of in ship experience for release date.

I suggest: wait. The game is on the "x-rebirth" trails: nice perspectives but still a bit messy and lacking. Wait, read reviews, opinions, watch videos, etc.

It's a great game and nothing like X Rebirth which was terrible (and probably still is). If you like space games like this you will definitely love it. But about preordering it, it might be cheaper in Feb, the only reason I preordered was to support the development, get decals/Founder World access, and play early. But they have since introduced the Merc Pack free to preorders which includes extra eagle, free ship and reduced insurance so that is well worth considering.

I doubt it will be cheaper for a pretty long time. Despite some of the Naysayers, I think it'll have a bigger playerbase than expected.

As for Bounty hunting, I've seen players with million credit bounties on their heads. But to take them down you'd need either team work, or a good ship with shield cells. People may say that it is an impossible fight to take down well armed players, but it isn't, it's just a very tough fight with alot of thought required ;-)
