Should I sell my 1.5 million CR viper to upgrade the asp instead?

I am thinking about it, I already put in around a million or so on the stock asp but I don't think its on par with what I want. So thinking about selling my viper worth 1.5 mill for upgrade money. What do you guys think?

I'd keep it just incase you hit a rough patch and have to sell it to pay your insurance next time you die. Also a viper has cheaper up keep / insurance costs. You can use it to bounty hunt if you need extra money.

Keep the viper - great for bounty hunting and far cheaper on insurance costs if you do get blown up. Insurance of viper fully upgrade around 100k. Insurance of the Asp semi upgraded - around 500k

Don't sell the Viper, use the Asp more profitably. 1.5m will buy you one or more dechent components but a trading fit Asp should make that money in 1-2 hours of straight grind on any moderately good trade route, but you still have your Viper so you agent committed to grinding fit all eternity....

Viper is best for combat.
Asp allows trade, mainly rare trading with its jump range.
Personally the Asp is a skip to next unless you are trading.

Keep the Viper unless you want to do boring trade runs over and over and over and over.....and over and over and over and over.....and over and over and over and over and over and over again and again and again and again.

A better idea Save your viper so you have something to fall back on if you die and lose your larger ship. until you get a larger ship. Then sell it.

From what you wrote - I would sell it now, and go for some crazy trading until you have so much money that you can fully outfit your Viper and don't be concerned if it will blow up.
That is what I did - I have spent like 3.5m on A grade equipment and it feels so good now. And if it blows out, I will earn other one with my 108T Type-6 in 3-4h of trading.

I look at the Viper as a ship for enjoyment, and I can't enjoy if thinking every second about insurance, death and so on.

I came here to ask this question as well, except I don't have an Asp only a Viper. It's great for bounty hunting but I feel like I could use a bit more firepower and the Asp seems to have a lot of fire power.
But I love my Viper, so I guess once I've upgraded it to the point where I'd call it complete I'll buy an Asp and try it out.

LOL.. why Trading is fun fun :p i can do trade route in my sleep now.

I don't know if any of you play World of Tanks, but upgrading ships in Elite has much the same principles.
In WoT it is best not to upgrade until you have enough xp to upgrade the new tank at least a bit, as often the new tank, despite being a tier higher, is worse than the old one which has been upgraded.
In Elite it's the same but with credits. Make sure you have enough credits to at least upgrade the new ship before getting it.

Every new tank in WoT and every new ship in Elite is pretty poor without upgrades.

I also don't sell old tanks in WoT to pay for new ones, I just keep going until I can buy the new tank outright.
Same in Elite.

That's not to say I don't sell ships or tanks in either game, I do, but not just to buy a new ship.

If you follow the same guidelines I do, and get into the habit of it, it makes everything a bit easier.

If you can buy the ASP plus needed upgrades for combat, that cost multiple times the price of the ship, your Viper will be chump change and you'll just keep it around to have it.

Here's some details about what it really costs to buy the ASP with just a cheap setup for trading. For combat, you'd need 20 or better yet 30 million to fit it.

Presumably, if you have a Viper, your focus is on combat and/or bounty hunting. If it is - keep the Viper. The Asp only has benefits if you want al all-round ship: combat ability, cargo space for pick-ups, excellent visibility and excellent jump range. However, the Asp is MUCH more expensive to run, repair and insure and you will need to spend at least 20mil to get it up to the spec of your Viper.

I have a Viper with mainly A and B modules and an Asp with a mix of modules (but worth about 10x what the Viper is). I can honestly say the Viper has higher survivability in combat against NPCs. It has much less difficulty taking down the Elite Anacondas than does the Asp. I suspect this is because the Asp is a larger target and needs the size 6 shield generator, which I cannot yet afford. Other people may prefer the Asp, but my experience is the Viper is better suited to bounty hunting.

The Asp is a great ship, but I think the Viper is better until you have A LOT of money in the bank.

Interesting view point.

I use the Viper for combat, but without the thorough comparison you seem to have given it.

I just wanted a combat ship for rank missions, that was cheap to max out while I'm working on procuring a Python. With the Viper, I'm spending less than 3 million, insurance is cheap and when I need the money, I can strip it down to the original 142k and leave it in my garage until have have enough spare change to fit it out again.

I'll buy an ASP again once I pass 100 million, that ship is a keeper in every respect. The close-together gun arrangement is excellent and I imagine with a size 6 shield, it'll rule.

Don't go for an Asp before you have 40 Million on your account. 30 for ship and upgrades, 10 in stock for safety.

I grinded away in a Lakon 6, then upgraded to a Asp to do some exploring and cargo runs for a change of pace, while having some defense, I then upgraded to a Lakon 7, as I had found a decent home with good income runs nearby. I now have a base Lakon 7 (max 232 cargo, no shield gen as I'm allied locally), a fully kitted Asp for Exploration, and a fully kitted Viper for combat. The L7 nets me @ 2m\hr on a short 4.72Ly run, and the other two ships are to keep things interesting. Now that I have some cash, and a fairly easy means of increasing same regularly, I find myself mostly Bounty Hunting. I tried Bounty Hunting with the Asp initially, but costs were prohibitive. For me these 3 ships are a perfect hangar group for E-D, and I expect I will be keeping them for some time, as the next step is still a ways off yet, given it is unlikely I will upgrade until I can kit the next ship properly, which is about 140m for a Python! I left my Sidewinder, and beta Eagle at my starting system, just in case... :)
