As in the title I am curious as to whether trading your ship in outright or stripping it down first has any difference in the total money received. I.E. I have a viper with a trade in value of about 800 k if I want to switch to a trader would it be advisable to sell all the viper upgrades first?

Yes... and also downgrade the ones you can't sell. You can sell modules back at the price you paid for them, but selling a ship back you only get a percentage of the cost of the ship and the same percentage of the cost of all the modules attached to it when you sell it.

Exactly what he said, if it's on your ship when it's sold you only get 90% of the value back so sell what you can and downgrade what you can't.
