Should I trade in my Asp for a Vulture?

Also, why are all the other ships named after snakes and not this?

Anyway, back to my original question. I've not read much on the forums about Vultures or from Vulture owners. I'm back from exploring with my Asp and want to head out pirating. I can easily afford a Vulture and can probably kit it out quite well but does it fare any better than the Asp when it comes to combat? I've noticed it only has two (albeit large) weapons slots. What kind of loadout (for taking down shields/hull) should I choose if I decide to buy one?

Thanks in advance!

If you want to pirate players, the asp is a much better ship than the vulture. You can jump further, have less power issues, and more importantly you have room for ill-gotten cargo! The vulture is a killer, not a pirate. While the vulture is a better fighter, the asp is more than capable of getting the better of the kinds of ships you would pirate, namely transport ships such as T6 and T7.

well for pirating the vulture is not really the best choice (power issues, limited cargo space), i'd go with an Asp for that; but if you mean piracy=player killing then yes the vulture will shine :D

Well either would do for pirating, some favourthe Vulture for any combat work and with good reson, it is primarily geared to combat but the Asp is no slouch either so long as you don't try to get into a fast turning fight.

For trade or combat trading the Asp has a better range (fuel tank range), better jump range and dare I say it is slightly faster in normal space than a Vulture.

You could make either work it depends on your game play.

core dynamics like to name their ships after birds, aside from their military ships.

to answer your question a vulture absolutely annihilates an asp in combat, in fact it does that to most ships it isn't even a comparison. It's like asking what does more damage? An infant or a shotgun?
But for piracy you need to be able to carry cargo, mass lock your opponent, catch your prey, and carry the tools of the trade ect. Popular pirate ships include the cobra, asp, dropship, clipper, FDL, and Python. Multi purpose ships with more internal slots and power overhead, and decent speed.
a vulture is more suited for dueling and bounty hunting than pirating.

Keep the ASP and save to buy a Vulture.

The ASP is a great ship to move around the galaxy.

I have a clipper, a vulture and a python park in different systems. I use the ASP to go from one to the other.

The Vulture is a great combat ship. Far better than the Asp. However, you'll be lacking in cargo space, it's a little slower and it won't mass lock much so it's not the most effective pirate vessel unless you will be working in a wing.

My personal weapon loadout for NPC farming (RES/CZ) is 2 large pulse (gimballed). These 2 are enough to take out any smaller ship with ease and with the larger ships, once you target the powerplant and can position yourself correctly you'll take them out with few problems. Pulse lasers are also quite efficient so you can tend to do really good DPS over time and you also won't have to worry about reloading so you can spend more time in the RES/CZ.

For pirating, I'm not sure as I haven't done any, but I'd say stick with the Asp unless you have the credits to buy something bigger. Or you could go with a Cobra for it's speed. I'm sure the more experienced real pirates can tell you what is best though :)

If you only want to fight then yes, the Vulture is very good at that. All the other things, not so good...
I still have both, as I would not want to loose one over the other.

For combat the Vulture is able to punch high above its weight, it's awesome and i love it. the jump range isn't the worst but the fuel tank is tiny. This is my combat loadout http://www.edshipyard.com/#/L=60N,4zg7Px01Q0mI3we0_q,306Q8I6Q5A7_6k5A,7Su9tQ7dg10i10i hasn't let me down yet. Just juggle the power priorities, you can load out above 100% equal to whatever the FSD, cargo hatch and Inderdictor use.

And what troa barton said "

Vulture is a dogfighter. Nothing else. I'd keep the Asp for piracy. Load it up with 6 multicannons, stick a skull on, and off you go ;)

Got my skulls already! But how do multicannons fare against shields? Also, gimballed or not?

There are 6 of them, don't worry, you'll be OK against shields ;). Go gimbal against small and fixed against large prey is a general rule, but when I was chasing Elite Condas in the Asp, I settled for gimballed - I like to land more bullets even at the tiny damage handicap.

Good advice, thanks!
