Newcomer / Intro Should I upgrade my Sidewinder or save for something else?

I'm wondering how sensible it might be to upgrade my Sidewinder as opposed to, say, buying an Eagle. Is the default Sidewinder basically worthless, or can it be viable?

Actually I found myself buying another Sidewinder later on. They are fun fast ships with good range and cheap to upgrade. I still use mine fully upgraded for fun and exploration (who cares if I get that blown up, insurance is cheap... now my other ships, that is a different story!).

However if you need cash, go for it, you can always just buy another.

The Sidewinder has more options based on the number of internal slots and stuff. A combat upgraded eagle will be a better fighter than a combat upgraded sidewinder, but the sidewinder has more breadth of options.

I guess the answer is, "it depends," what are you interested in?

I'm still flying my Sidey with over 350K Cr sunk into it. I've got all B modules and a pair of G1 Gimballed Pulse Lasers.

I've been bounty hunting with that thing for a few days with great success. It looks pretty good too, with my Blue Sonora paint job. Not exactly a menacing sight, but I'm okay with my Bounties being lulled into a false sense of security.

I'll never sell it. You'll have to kill me to get it.

that's good to know - while I've not enough to upgrade yet I was wondering a simular thing - and knowing the investments aren't a write off is great news

Think I'm going to

upgrade Sidewinder
trade up for Hauler
make enough $ to upgrade the Hauler and invest in another Sidewinder to upgrade as my exploration/pirating boat

(or I may just change my mind as I go along/get blown up)

upgrade SW's; cargo, PD and FSD (run it without weapons) until u have around 100k and then sell crap SW and go hauler and upgrade it significantly and run it without weapons (i run a shield cell since im in IRONMAN MODE) until U hit 400k and then sell crap Hauler and jump in Cobra which u first upgrade as a full cargo ship with shields and NO weapons (i think 44 cargo) until u hit 1 million THEN either push for the ASP or kit out Cobra as a bounty hunter.

i wiped last week and took this route and in my kitted out Cobra over the last 4-5 days of bounty hunting i am up to Novice with 112 kills and 750K in bounties and no deaths since wipe. most of those ships i pulled out of SC including many ASPs and sev Clippers. I am in ironman mode so i only engage Pythins and Annacondas with help. A cop stole a 75K Python bounty from me when i did 90% of damage. i watched the fight for a while and cops could not drop his shields which i did quickly, but i ran out of power right at the kill shot! i was scared when a drop ship interdicted me in SW, but i motored away and he didnt even drop my shields.

in BETA i died 28 times really having fun and blasting around taking on Annacondas and dying boosting inside station really learning the game esp how to use thrusters in combat against bigger ships which was a great training ground, but now after cleansave REROLL theres no fun, its DEATHDEALER time!

GAME ON!

There is no penalty for upgrading. You can sell your upgrades back later when you buy a new ship. You do not lose money.
