Should I upgraded? Exploration ship

Hi guys,
I currently have a decent cobra mkiii with a good load out that I mainly used for exploring. I'm fairly new and have only made it out to the coalsack nebula. I think my ship is decent but I have roughly 3 million credits and am trying to decide if it is worth it to upgrade. I was looking at maybe the diamondback Explorer. I'm not sure if I should spend some more time to get more credits and get a better ship like the asp or something. Any ideas and advice would be appreciated!

Save up and get the asp if exploration is your preferred activity. You can also get the DBE now and then sell it later. Its only a 10% penalty, when you sell, on the purchase price of the ship.

In any case you will need around 14-20 million to completely outfit either ship for exploration. Even more if you insist on a 6A fuel scoop. Certainly a time saver for covering large distances quickly. Try to get the engineer materials for a grade 5 fsd upgrade

If you have Horizons, don't get the DBE. It's a great ship but crippled by lack of internal space. Its absolutely useless for deep space exploration, which is a shame because it runs cool, is quick and has best fsd range. Mine will now be used for bubble exploration and avoiding interdictions.
I headed out on the Sagittarius Carina mission, which is a grand loop of around 180,000 light years. 8000 light years in, i turned back to the bubble and traded in for an Asp X.
After some engineering to the fsd. I can now head out, fully equipped, shielded, armed and still maintain a respectable travel distance.
If you can't afford an Asp. Stick with the Cobra. It's better than the DBE.
Or find a rares run and grind out some cash. Won't take you long to buy and equip an Asp.

It's worth it.
Lived experience.

Irkutsk Station in Alioth sells Asps at a 20% discount. It's a permit system - if you become allied with the Alioth Independants in nearby systems (selling you exploration data to their stations, doing missions, trade, whatever), you'll get a mission that grants you the permit.
If a permit is too much hassle, IIRC I think they're 15% off in Li-Yong Rui space.

But using a Cobra to save up for the Asp is what I would do. The Asp is a fantastic ship. I have much more expensive ships and still keep finding tasks for which the Asp is the best tool for the job.

Asp all the way. After 2.2 launches you pretty much only need an Asp and a Vulture to do 99% of the stuff in the game. Since you can summon the Vulture with space magic with 2.2 and fly around with the Asp with 40+ jump range I would say go for that. I decided to mod one out after the news, 512 speed boosts!

Wow thanks for all the responses! with the more research i have done and with your responses i think that saving up and going to the asp x is my best option. i did just buy horizons yesterday. it looks like the asp x has enough internals to allow for a plantary exploration vehicle also which i would like to try also! thanks all! and thanks to Archvillain for the tip!

The diamondback explorer is a great exploration ship! Extreme heat mitigation, good jump range (around 35ly before engineer mods), looks sweet, and it doesn't cost too much. Can't go wrong with a DBX, but the Asp is arguably better, only because it has more internal space and longer jump ranges, but the heat motivation isn't as good
