Engineers Should One bother?

With the exception of the Grade 5 FSD, you can get away with well-rolled Grade 3 for everything else and get results that are nearly as good for far less effort invested. Occasionally, a Grade 5 is enough to tempt me to farm materials for though, like Grade 5 Overcharged multicannons for example; They have no jitter, whilst Grades 1-4 add jitter which makes them far less useful.

Farm materials for something if you can see a meaningful difference between G3 and G5, otherwise you're likely to get several good G3 rolls before you've even managed to gather the materials for a single G5 roll, and a good G3 will likely be as good as a typical G5.

Should one bother with engineers?

At all. For any purpose whatsoever.

Please give your reasons pro or contra the use, advantage, purpose or benefit to engineers or otherwise refraining from entertaining them. Thanks.

You don't have to, but I personally really like it.
Once you have tasted what a dirty drive, or an enhanced FSD can do for you you will want it for all your ships.

I also feel that engineer modifications really help to make your ship feel more personal and unique.

In general the engineers are a really good addition to the game. There are still a few teething problems, like lack of engineer commodity storage and becoming a pirate magnet, or the lack of in game info about mats and commodities, but I hope this will improve. In the mean time there's Inara: http://inara.cz/galaxy-engineers.

EDIT: ANd FD just confirmed we will get commodity storage !!!

Basically it boils down to the following broad general groups:

- A) Old elite fans that aren't necessarily gamers, and are happy playing a few hours every now and then regardless what they really do, and will defend anything and everything to do with this game because its the only one they are interested in playing.

- B) Nolife gamers, that have 12 hours a day to put into playing the game and so long grinds are not a consideration for them, and always "worth it" because they end up with nothing better to do. I know, i have been there.

- C) Average gamers, the people in between, that want to play more than they can but have RL issues that prevent that. These people wish to feel their time is well spent when they get chance to play. To that end, grinding for 3 hours to try and get one upgrade, doesnt really cut it for them.

In summary, the question of whether engineer upgrades are worth bothering with is highly relative.

Group A will tell you it is, but at a snails pace because they cant understand anyone wanting to do more than fly around looking at the same stars and planets and imagining it as "exploring".

Group B will tell you it is worth it because clearly, what else is there to do? you must have all day every day to grind everything possible like they do right? So you have to do it because all the other no lifers do it and so it is necessary to stay competitive with no lifers, otherwise "git gud" ensues.

Group C will tell you it is worth it but only to a certain extent. But in reality, its not fun, and you are probably better off spending your limited free time playing a game that rewards you more for your time spent.

People need to ask themselves what group they fall into and then decide if it is worth it. Simple.

I can see I fit best in category C.

A part of me love this game extremely much.

And that part is - or rather; was - thrilled about being able to give my Cobra a decent jump range and make it even faster.
Not to mention the Python; which can now be transformed from a beautiful nightmare into a beautiful and wonderful dream.

But the way to those goodies turned out to be some sort of Hell.
Ultra boring tasks that took forever.

Thus I found myself playing much less Elite.
They did make the dullards tasks less of black hole time sink - after several months.

And now, FINALLY, it seems we can have some solution to the extremely silly commodities problem.

Yeah, C for me.
