Should Ship ID Tags be set for good ?

We will soon be able to name our ships and rename them as much as we want. But what about Ship ID tag ?

Currently, our ship's ID tag is generated and set for us but can be changed at will just like the ship's name.

Shouldn't it be fixed and refer to the hull of you ship to give it a sense of uniqueness ? Losing your ship would also mean a new tag for instance.

There should also be prefix for each major group in the game : Federal, Alliance, Imperial, Canonn, etc...

What do you think ? :D

EDIT : I must have been away too long... We cannot make polls anymore ?

I'd like that. The ID tag is the equivalent of a VIN. Each should be unique, it's the definitive identifier for the ship. Names can be changed, but the ship is the same.

BUT

I note some player groups want to use them for a 'tag' which is also a good idea.

Hence ship prefix ? Also this would mean that anyone can claim to be part of a given group and gank...

I would have thought player groups could incorporate tags into the name, in the same way we have "USS" for yank ships and "HMS" for brit ships etc.

Not terribly fussed but, if forced to choose, I'd rather the ship Idents were unique and unchangeable, like a VIN.
Seems like that might be more useful for the game too, as a means of tracking a ship should they ever decide to implement a meaningful C&P system.

Make em somewhat fixed.. but have a shady contact be able to change it for a price..
Really cool idea.

Though I have to ask, what/where is this ship ID tag? Is this something new in 2.3? Or is this another small ED feature that I've overlooked all this time?? :eek:

It's a feature that was introduced with 2.2 iirc. Flight control use it when you want to dock and was composed initial of your ship's manufacturer and the first three letters of your name.

They are expanding it in 2.3 but hopefully will get some meaningful feature out of it !

Ideally yes (if they're unique that is) +1

Cmdrs should also be aware that changing your ships name has (also) long been considered, extremely bad luck;
According to legend every vessel is recorded by name in the Ledger of the Deep, known personally to Poseidon, or Neptune, the gods of the seas. It is logical then, if we wish to change the name of our boat, the first thing we must do is to purge its name from the Ledger of the Deep, and from Poseidon’s memory. As follows;

Nope, for one I don't give a stuff about the Feds/Imperials or Alliance. Being able to manually set a ship reg ID allows me to categorize my fleet using a number of factors, just like in reality.

Was the same deal with X3TC, I could look at one of my ship ID's and instantly tell when it was purchased and it's exact role in the fleet. Might not be a big deal for some, I have multiple Pythons/Anaconda's/T9's/Cutters,plus a huge amount of small ships, all with a unique role.

Makes sense for a game where you actually manage a fleet but then again you still can do whatever you want with ship naming. Ship ID in this case is like a VIN number, a hull number and should be fixed.

Well my exact point is I do manage a fleet in game, just because they are not all flying at the same time is irrelevant. Currently the only way to organise a fleet of multiple ships is to either look in outfitting/Shipyard at the loadout or use pen and paper.

A fixed Id may work well for you, but please don't try to force that on anyone else. The devs have given us the option to pick and adjust our own ID's for a reason.

Just curious - why would you need two fields you could set?

Like you are not trying to impose your's onto others ? You already have ship naming for all you fleet fantasies.

Erm, can't you tell them apart by their names?

What about pirate and ne'er do wells, they need to be able to change their ship id's to escape heat from the System Authorities!

"No Officer, this is VN-628 Millenium Falcon, I think you were looking for XX-666 Millenium Falcon."

;)

This is exactly the reason why I love the proposition of someone here : The shady contacts can change your ID for a Fee !

Obligatory "The Expanse" reference to naming your ship here...

What that clip doesn't show you is that there is a small thermonuclear device attached to the transponder. Mess with it in the wrong way and BOOM!
You don't go changing your ship name easily. :)
