Should vessels have navigational lights?

Just wondering if like ships space going vessels would have navigation lights?

The way big ships have red/green lights to indicate port/starboard/fore and aft. I suppose space craft would also need up/down.

The idea is even if you can't tell what a distant ship looks like you get an idea of it's orientation.

IMO yes. Though the arrangement of navigation lights and strobes would probably need to be different for space.

I wish I was English like my hero Tj.
Some sweet navigation lights would be awesome! Love the ones in, say, EVE. Very atmospheric.

They wouldn't be of much use in battle, since heat signatures are much more important then sight, but sure, why not?

Also for docking with other ships and the like, their would be lowspeed maneuvers where the lights would be considered an important backup if some automated systems were down.

YES, even better if light direction can be controlled.

And if someone blinds into my cockpit I want to see a lenseflare. Could be used for combat tactics

Do you also want to be permanently blinded by a laser glancing your cockpit?

I don't think cockpit windows should be vulnerable to this sort of thing, that would make them seem an even dafter idea than they already do.

Agreed, totally.

Let see now, we are going to be piloting ships that are capable of flying near stars pushing out all wavelengths? Laser light or any other light for that matter should be the least of their problems.

As for nav lights in space? Docking around stations maybe, aero-flight landing on planets maybe, but anything else is rather pointless in the deep depths of space.

I would assume that they would be mandatory in the vicinity of most stations, though perhaps not pirate or smuggler stations.

I would hope that there would be the option to turn then off if I was trying to hide.

Absolutely, especially for docking and landing in the future expansion, or where heavy traffic or poor visibility is present. Flood lights are a must too, for docking, observing derelicts or on worlds where lighting is poor due to night cycles or dust storms or something.

In deep space I think lights will be a big giveaway for pirates bounty hunters.

No not at all...confusing for them in battle...Indicate left...But turn right.....Sneaky eh :D

Really though I think if you watch the scavenger hunt video ( its all ingame ) the ship is using a searchlight to scan the wreckage...and it looks great
